Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Dietitian to join our friendly dietetic department at Liverpool Women’s Hospital. The hospital, which is a teaching hospital, is the largest specialist provider of health services for women and babies in Europe. We work under a service level agreement with Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Trust and benefit from the support and learning opportunities that larger teams can provide. The successful post holder will be working across two services -diabetes and oncology; and will contribute to both the diabetes and oncology multidisciplinary teams.

Our team of dietitians working in Women’s Health, provide an inpatient service to the maternity and gynaecology wards. The team also deliver outpatient clinics (both face to face and remote) for diabetes in pregnancy, gynaecological oncology, and maternity services. This is an exciting time to join our expanding team as the service is undergoing a restructure with continuous improvements to the nutrition and dietetic provision across the Trust.

They will have supervision from the clinical leads in these areas. You will be a good team player, flexible, reliable, conscientious, self-motivated, and forward thinking, with excellent communication, leadership and interpersonal skills. Comprehensive dietetic knowledge and previous diabetes and oncology clinical experience is important. Teaching skills, experience of multi-disciplinary team working and enthusiasm for clinical audit to develop the service are beneficial.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

From an oncology perspective, you will be able to extend your knowledge and skills in a wide range of gynae cancer types and treatments. They must have recent experience in nutritional support. As a specialist oncology dietitian, you will be clinically responsible for the nutritional care and management of patients and independently plan organise and prioritise patient related and professional demands. From a diabetes perspective, you will be supporting women with gestational diabetes and existing Type 2 diabetes during pregnancy, which involves close working with the obstetric and diabetes teams. You will be covering the advanced diabetes dietitian in type 1 pregnancy clinics during periods of leave. Previous experience of carbohydrate counting is desirable.

We have an excellent staff supervision system enabling our staff to be committed to developing both services and themselves. You will receive regular supervision and you will provide supervision for rotational band five dietitians in diabetes and oncology when needed. You will also be involved in student training. This post gives you the opportunity to develop skills in two interesting areas of dietetics and there will be opportunities for continuous professional development.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc in Nutrition and Dietetics or post-graduate Diploma
  • Current registration with HPC.
  • Membership of BDA or equivalent professional indemnity.
Desirable criteria
  • Introductory level Clinical Supervisory Skills Training.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Broad clinical experience in at least 3 clinical areas, including medical and surgical patients.
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary working.
  • Experience and evidence of continuing professional development.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of training student dietitians.
  • Experience of conducting audit

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • While able to work independently, ability to recognise own limitations and access advice and information appropriately.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively convey information.
  • Problem solving skills.
  • Time management – able to prioritise work, respond appropriately to demands and keep to time in out patient setting.
  • Good presentation skills.
Desirable criteria
  • I.T. Skills – power-point, keyboard and e-mail.
