Consultant

Job overview

Location: Aintree University Hospital
Organisation: University Hospitals of Liverpool Group (ULHG)
Contract Type: Substantive | Full Time
Salary: In line with NHS Consultant Terms and Conditions

University Hospitals of Liverpool Group (ULHG) is pleased to invite applications for a Consultant Gastroenterologist to join our expanding team at Aintree University Hospital. This post is part of a strategic investment in our consultant and multidisciplinary workforce, supporting high-quality, patient-centred gastroenterology care.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a collaborative and forward-thinking department in a high-acuity teaching hospital known for clinical excellence. You’ll play a key role in delivering luminal gastroenterology services, with scope to develop a subspecialty interest in areas such as IBD, advanced endoscopy, nutrition, education, or cancer pathways.

The successful candidate will be based exclusively at Aintree and supported to grow their clinical and academic interests within a dynamic, and high-volume JAG-accredited endoscopy environment.

Applicants must hold full GMC registration with a licence to practise, MRCP(UK) (or equivalent), and be on the Specialist Register (or within 6 months of CCT at interview).

We welcome applications from both new consultants and experienced clinicians, including those seeking less-than-full-time work.

Informal enquiries and visits are encouraged.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities

The successful applicant will join a supportive consultant team delivering high-quality, patient-centred care within the luminal gastroenterology service at Aintree University Hospital.

Core Duties Include:

  • Specialist Gastroenterology Care: Deliver luminal services with the opportunity to develop a subspecialty interest such as IBD, advanced endoscopy, UGI disorders, nutrition, capsule endoscopy, education, or cancer pathways.

  • Inpatient Care: Participate in a rotational “hot week” model, leading care on the gastroenterology ward supported by junior doctors and specialist nurses.

  • Outpatient Clinics & Endoscopy: Conduct regular general and subspecialty clinics; contribute to diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, with opportunities for training supervision.

  • GI Bleed & On-Call Rota: Join the 1:11 out-of-hours rota, covering emergency GI bleeds, inpatients, and acute referrals—job-planned in line with national T&Cs.

  • MDT Involvement: Engage in MDTs including IBD, cancer, nutrition, and HPB, supporting integrated, pathway-based care.

  • Teaching & Development: Support education for undergraduates and postgraduates, contribute to endoscopy training, and lead or participate in quality improvement and service innovation.

The role offers flexibility, leadership development, and the chance to shape subspecialty services in a dynamic unit.
