We a seeking a motivated and experienced nurse in vascular access to join our dynamic IV access team at LUHFT. This is a cross site post across multiple bases at LUHFT and the successful candidate will be the deputy manager for the IV Access Team.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone with extensive experience in placing and managing various vascular access devices, who can work as part of a highly effective nurse led service. The successful candidate will provide effective leadership and management support for the team and to support the Nurse Consultant.
This role also involves service and team development to to innovate and ensure the effective delivery of the service.
Main duties of the job
The Lead Nurse will be responsible for providing a high quality, expert, holistic service for all adult patient groups across LUHFT, Lead and manage the trust wide service for delivering short and long term vascular access.
Develop specialist policies and standards, monitor outcomes and provide and interpret surveillance data
Coordinate treatment room sessions for implanted port/ tunnelled line/ PICC insertion and removals and an inpatient bedside PICC/Midline insertion team.
Assess, prioritise and schedule patients referred for vascular access from both in-patient wards, OPAT and community IV service. Support clinical teams in the care and management of vascular access through education, training and monitoring of devices.
Co-ordinate and further development of the IV service through providing an efficient patient pathway from initial referral to insertion or removal of appropriate longer term vascular access device.
Lead and manage the IV Team to ensure efficient and effective service delivery over a 5 day working week.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical
To oversee all aspects of the vascular access service in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team
To deliver clinical support in the form of PICC/Midline insertion, tunnelled line insertion and removal with the prospect of developing a nurse led port insertion service
To prioritise workload of the IV Team, assess performance and provide clear constructive feedback to team members
To develop, update and work within agreed protocols for the management of set related issues, such as device insertion, removal and care and maintenance, patient group directions
To take a leading role, in partnership with other professional colleagues, in the development of multi-professional policies, guidelines, care pathways and protocols to support the vascular access service
Vascular Access Lead Nurse Job Description
Contribute to quality improvement around IV management.
To be a point of contact and to provide advice on vascular access issues and lead by example in promoting & delivering high standards of evidence based clinical treatment and sharing clinical expertise
To act as an effective role model and mentor for all nurses, doctors, students and health care support workers while providing advice and support to any healthcare professional as required.
To maintain communication systems between referring consultants, vascular access team members and clinical departments.
To ensure that effective communication structures are in place to enable patients and relatives to understand the nature of the care, treatment and progress.
To maintain documentation which accurately reflects the insertion and care of vascular access device and treatment plan in accordance with local and national recommendations

Managerial/Leadership.
Responsible for managing the workload of the vascular access service, working closely with members of the multidisciplinary team trust wide.
Organise, plan and manage own workload and the workload of the service.
Ensure off duty/ annual leave arrangements provide adequate cover for the team.
To ensure a safe environment for patient care that is underpinned by Health and Safety policies and guidelines.
To report accidents/incidents to the Risk Management Group, and participate in the investigation of same in accordance with Trust policies, taking corrective action where appropriate.
To investigate complaints and formulate reports as required
To ensure infection control policies are fully implemented.
Vascular Access Lead Nurse Job Description
Participate in the recruitment and selection of new staff as required.
Responsible for maintaining and analysing data relating to service delivery, activity and progress and presenting to relevant committees, groups on board to ward level e.g. insertion data, complication data
Responsible for making recommendations, providing advice and able to prepare strategic reports/ briefings for the relevant meetings, Committees as required.
To ensure the effective and efficient use of physical and financial resources; make recommendations regarding supplies and equipment in relation to IV management and access.
Education and Development
To provide verbal and written information for patients, and their carers to enable them to understand the nature of the care, treatment and progress.
To work collaboratively with trust wide nursing staff to develop skills and knowledge in relation to vascular access devices and their care.
To act as a resource of expert advice for all healthcare professionals and other interested parties.
To lead in the training of health care professionals in relation to the vascular access service and devices placed
Responsible for planning and leading specialist nursing service provision including their education and training.
To record and report activity relating to training and education delivered by the IV team and evaluate sessions to maintain a high quality service.
To develop, lead and participate in research programmes within the vascular access service and disseminate findings locally and nationally.
To collate, provide audit and research data to aid planning and monitoring of clinical care and service provision.
Clinical Governance
To develop specialist policies, standards and guidelines in own specialist area.
To evaluate with others the effectiveness of any changes and how these have improved services.
To propose policy of service changes which impact beyond own area of activity.
Identify need for, and undertake, research, clinical audit, benchmarking and equipment trials, in order to improve effectiveness of patient care in relation to IV management and access.

Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse
- Masters degree (or equivalent)
- Evidence of professional/clinical knowledge in area supplemented by specialist clinical, managerial training and CPD
- Teaching certificate or equivalent
- Evidence of proactive involvement in the mentorship and development of nurses and nursing practice
- Effective communicator able to communicate complex and sensitive information
Experience
