Job overview
To provide high quality advanced work of a complex nature within the Orthodontics laboratory. The post holder will be responsible for developing own skills and knowledge within dental technology. Will be required to move between departments when requested.
Main duties of the job
· Comply with the department’s standard procedures and conformity of custom-made dental appliances under the European medical devices directive.
· Assess individual units of work for possible clinical/technical complications and discuss ways and means of overcoming them with relevant clinicians.
· Advise and assist less experienced dental technicians, graduates and clinicians on technical/clinical problems relating to treatment planning which will often require consultations on clinic where patient’s wishes and expectations are expressed.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
· Clinically assist undergraduates/clinicians in the evaluation of shades, planning and design.
· Advise/Assist clinical undergraduates and consultants, Senior and junior clinical staff on technical/clinical problems relating to patient treatment/treatment plans which will often require consultations on clinic where patients wishes and expectations are expressed. Adjustments will be required to be made at chairside by the technician.
· Assess individual units of work (prior to construction) for possible technical/clinical complications and discuss ways and means of overcoming them with relevant members of staff.
· Assist the Chief Technician/Line Manager in the supervision and guidance of technicians and student technicians.
· Quality assures all appliances constructed.
· As part of an educational establishment the post holder on occasion will be expected to contribute to teaching dental undergraduates, postgraduates and technicians.
· To maintain the strictest confidence in relation to personnel related information and it must be recognised that all patient related information is confidential whether formally recorded or not.
· Construct working study casts and trim as required.
· Plan, design and construct a broad range of precision, complex and specialised fixed / removable / myofunctional orthodontic and basic prosthodontic appliances.
Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Fully Qualified dental technician holding a BSc in Dental Technology or equivalent
- Nationally recognised advanced qualification at HNC/HND level or equivalent experience specialising in Orthodontics.
- Evidence of continuous professional and personal development
Experience
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable post qualification experience in appropriate discipline
- Previous experience working in a Dental Hospital or private Laboratory
- Experience in the production of complex fixed and removable Orthodontic appliances
- Plan design and construct complex fixed, removable and myofunctional Orthodontic and basic Prosthodontics appliances.
Desirable criteria
- Previous supervisory experience
- Experience of teaching/instructing
Skills
Essential criteria
- IT Skills
- Ability to work as a member of the dental team
- Good communication skills both oral and written
