Job overview

Take responsibility for identified areas of delivery under the overall direction of the Lead Nurse for Palliative Care and Acute Oncology, Specialty Clinical Director and Deputy Director of Operations in the development and delivery of the Integrated Mersey Palliative Care Team (IMPaCT) service, in collaboration with external partners. Specifically, this will include leading and co-ordinating workforce, workload and service development projects within the ambulatory specialist palliative care team (specifically ambulatory nursing and therapy teams and hospice at home service) and to oversee the daily operation of the North IMPaCT hub .

Main duties of the job

To provide professional nursing leadership as a member of the senior management team within the specialist palliative care department
2. To work as a senior nurse with professionalism, authority and expertise, acting as a role model for other nursing staff
3. To facilitate the efficient and effective management of resources within the ambulatory specialist palliative care team, as part of the wider integrated services
4. In conjunction with other members of the senior management team and external partners, ensure that the standards of the service meet the strategic aims and development of the Trust
5. Ensure the efficient and effective operation of the ambulatory specialist palliative care service and north IMPaCT hub on a day to day basis

6. To undertake responsibility for the clinical supervision and day to day operational management of the ambulatory specialist palliative care nursing and therapy teams in collaboration with the Lead Nurse where appropriate
7. In collaboration other members of the senior management team, contribute to the strategic development for the specialist palliative care department, including the utilisation of resources which impact on the budget, such as staffing, equipment and consumables
8. To provide leadership and oversight of quality and service improvement projects to support development of the integrated palliative care services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To influence the care of patients and carers with palliative and specialist palliative care needs, either directly or indirectly using advanced clinical knowledge and research evidence based practices, firmly rooted in nursing and specialist palliative care.

To provide specialist education and training that empowers the generic ward staff. To provide education and training for pre-registration nurses. To be a lead specialist in a defined area of nursing.

To have an active lead role in the AHSPCT Research and Service Innovation Strategy. To have an active lead role in the Merseyside and Cheshire Palliative Care Audit Group and AHSPCT Audit Programme. To achieve 20% of role in Expert Clinical Practice and 80% Education / Research and Audit and Leadership.

To act as a positive role model for the team and wider organisation. To give clear direction and take a leadership role in turning the team’s strategic vision into a workable agenda that the team is motivated to follow

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • First Level Registered nurse on parts 1 or 12 of the NMC register
  • Recordable qualification in palliative care or oncology at Diploma level
  • ENB 998 or City & Guilds 730/7 or equivalent – Teaching and Assessing in Clinical Practice
  • Educated to Degree level or equivalent in relevant area
Desirable criteria
  • Formal Masters degree

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant post reg – relevant experience including a position of responsibility
  • Demonstrable experience within a relevant speciality
  • Extensive clinical management experience within an acute setting

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of national policies influencing cancer and palliative care
  • Demonstrate specialist knowledge across a range of work practices related to Education, Research and Audit within Specialist Palliative Care
Desirable criteria
  • To have published in a peer reviewed journal
