Consultant in Palliative Medicine

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust wishes to appoint three substantive Consultants in Palliative Medicine (Full time 10PA post) to support the integrated palliative care services across the Trust
The successful applicants will work to support the in-patient, advisory, ambulatory and community based services across the Trust as a member of the Integrated Palliative Care medical team. Duties will be undertaken in conjunction with consultant colleagues, with the support of an annual job planning process to provide oversight and supervision to the consultant led services
Applicants are required to hold Membership of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent qualifications, to be fully registered with the General Medical Council with licence to practise and listed on the Specialist Register or due to be registered within six months of the date of appointment.
Main duties of the job
The appointee, together with his or her colleagues will have a commitment to the provision of consultant medical cover within the Integrated Palliative Care medical team across the sites.
The posts include 10 Programmed activities (PAs) and the main commitments of this posts in the first year (subject to annualised job planning)
Due to the integrated nature of the medical team, the job plans of the team will be reviewed on an annual basis, and there will be the potential opportunity to work with other aspects of the service on a rotational basis. The post holder will be expected to provide cross cover support to other services when required and undertake community visits where necessary to promote continuity of care for patients.
In addition, other duties will include involvement in the education and audit program of the directorate, administration, attendance at meetings and continuing medical education. The post holder will have access to shared office space located within the palliative care team offices, with fixed and mobile telephone and computer facilities, and secretarial support from the shared administrative team for the directorate.
It is expected that the appointee will participate in the current second on call medical rota on a 1:6/7 basis for weeknights and weekends.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MB ChB (or equivalent
- MBBS (or equivalent)
- MRCP (UK)
Desirable criteria
- Higher degree such as MSC, MD or PhD
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians
Registration
Essential criteria
- Full registration with the GMC and licence to practise (or eligible for)
- Entry on GMC Specialist Register for Palliative Medicine via CCT (or proposed CCT date within 6 months of interview), CESR or European Community Rights
Knowledge and skills
Essential criteria
- Broad experience in management of palliative care patients in all settings
- Evidence of continuing medical education.
Desirable criteria
- Previous clinical experience at consultant level
Teaching & training
Essential criteria
- Evidence of delivery of palliative care and communication skills education to undergraduate and postgraduate students from a multi-disciplinary background.
Desirable criteria
- Teaching qualification eg PGCE
- Attendance at Train the Trainer or similar course
- Evidence of training in appraisal/ educational supervision
Clinical Governance & Audit
Essential criteria
- Understanding of NHS management structures and the principles of Clinical Governance.
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
- Ability to assess, contain and manage clinical risk and support other colleagues in doing the same
- Thorough understanding of the principles of clinical audit.
Desirable criteria
- Publication of audit results
Research
Essential criteria
- Understanding principles of research.
- Evidence of enthusiasm for involvement in research
Desirable criteria
- Proven track record in research including success in obtaining funding and publication
Management and Leadership
Essential criteria
- Demonstrate an understanding of the management and financial challenges within an NHS Foundation Trust and the charitable sector
- Experience of implementing service change to enhance the quality of patient care
- Ability to think strategically about the wider needs of patients and the service
- Ability to support junior medical staff, act as a role model and respond appropriately to any concerns.
- Ability to provide consultant level leadership within the MDT
- Able to demonstrate a collaborative and inclusive approach to management and clinical leadership
Desirable criteria
- Management course in NHS and voluntary sector
