Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for a position as an Advanced Assistant Technical Officer / Science Manufacturing Technician (SMT) in Aseptic Manufacturing at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, in a new clean room facility. 

This opportunity provides the post holder with an opportunity to learn new skills, take on challenges and work with brand new manufacturing equipment. The postholder will be welcomed into a team who share a passion to developing high quality, safe & efficacious medicines that are vital for patient care.

Main duties of the job

To work as part of the pharmacy Aseptic Services team facilitating the comprehensive and efficient preparation, supply and delivery of aseptically manufactured products.  Including Parenteral Nutrition (PN), Centralised Intravenous Additive Services (CIVAS), Cytotoxic agents and Clinical Trial Investigational Medicinal Products.

To participate in the delivery and training of staff and assist with the delivery and maintenance of the quality assurance program.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Provide support throughout aseptic unit, in carrying out tasks associated with set up, labelling and packaging of aseptically prepared products in a timely manner.

Carry out environmental monitoring tasks, in accordance with departmental procedures and safe systems of work.

Ensure safe use of equipment and ensure staff use equipment in accordance with instructions and SOP's.

To carry out aseptic preparation including parenteral nutrition, CIVA, cytotoxic drugs, gene therapy and monoclonal antibodies from point of prescription receipt.

To be aware and follow all departmental operating procedures and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) guidance at all times. 

To communicate effectively with healthcare professionals both within and outside the Trust. To ensure good team working with other pharmacy staff, ward staff and other service providers as necessary.

To train junior members of staff in core areas as deemed appropriate by the Senior Technical Team.

To be aware of and participate, where required, in departmental audits.

To be a professional role model for Assistant Technical Officers and Senior Assistant Technical Officer.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services, Science Manufacturing Technician or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ Level 2 Pharmacy Services, Science Manufacturing Technician or equivalent
  • member of the GPhC, Science Council or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable GMP pharmacy / QC laboratory practical work experience and / or Substantial experience in an industrial / pharmaceutical setting
  • Experience of working in a team
  • Preparation of Aseptic products
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of using automated equipment

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Clear and accurate verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to use different IT applications
  • Ability to work in a busy environment to meet deadlines and pay attention to detail
  • Ability to work alone or part of a team
