Job overview

An exciting opportunity to become the  Principal Pharmacist - Medicines Optimisation  within a dynamic cancer hospital pharmacy team. 

We are seeking a pharmacist with experience in a leadership role to drive and deliver our medicines optimisation strategy and lead the medicines value and procurement team. 

This is an exceptionally exciting opportunity for the right individual to join our team to develop and lead on services within the Pharmacy Department, Trust and wider system. The successful candidate will have well developed listening and communication skills as well as the ability to build effective working relationships. You will provide pro-active professional pharmaceutical support to our clinicians, managers, patients and carers. 

The postholder will be part of the senior pharmacy management team within the department and will represent pharmacy services both within the Trust and externally, and be able to work towards Trust, locality and ICB agendas. 

This job would be suitable for a person seeking a rewarding and challenging job looking to ensure that our cancer patients get access to cancer medicines across our network and that treatments are used in the most appropriate and cost effective manner. 

Oncology experience is desirable however not essential as full training can be offered in house, and we would encourage applications from all sectors of the pharmacist workforce.  

Main duties of the job

The current drug expenditure is in the region of £110m per annum, so this post is critical to our success, and the postholder will be expected to have a unique perspective on medicines value, coupled with effective use of resources and justification of expenditure. Medicines value, by definition, is far more broad than drug cost. 

Responsible for identification, management and reporting of high cost drug procurement and billing systems jointly with Oncology pharmacy, Pharmacy subsidiary company, finance department and information services.  

The postholder will be part of the senior pharmacy management team within the department and will represent pharmacy services both within the Trust and externally. 

The postholder will be providing exceptional care to oncology patients across the trust and to our satellite hubs. 

You will be providing expert advice to our healthcare professionals in relation to our inpatients and also outpatient services. 

The postholder will be part of a fabulous team with pharmacist prescribers, medicines management technicians specialist pharmacists, rotational technicians, assistants and a cohort of pharmacists. We also have close links with BOPA and LJMU.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Master of pharmacy or equivalent
  • GPHC registered
  • Postgraduate diploma or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership qualification/training or equivalent experiential learning
  • Member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain
  • Member of the United Kingdom Clinical Pharmacy Association

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Undertaken lead role in CIP / QIPP / delivery of cost improvement plans.
  • Understanding of the medicines value and system approach.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience as a qualified pharmacist within a range of clinical areas
  • Financial forecasting and managing drug expenditure to include contribution to delivering cost improvement programmes
  • Significant experience of leading and managing change projects to improve services.
  • Experience of developing evidence based clinical guidelines / policies
  • Undertaken a lead role in audit
  • Experience delivering education and training, and providing supervision to support the development of multidisciplinary team
  • Experience of setting and delivering objectives
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in oncology pharmacy
  • Experience of managing others including appraisals, objective setting and personal development planning
  • Expert knowledge of risk management systems and processes
  • Expert knowledge of medicines legislation and regulation within NHS acute trust settings
  • Experience of working across organisational boundaries and managing complex stakeholder relationships
