Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic pharmacist, passionate about the development of safe, patient centred care to come and lead our medicines safety agenda as Medicines Safety Officer. Our Pharmacy team is large, diverse and friendly. Working within a cutting edge clinical environment we are supported to be forward thinking and innovative. This role represents an exciting opportunity to become a senior member of our team. The successful candidate will receive mentoring and support to grow as a leader.

You will develop and drive the Trustwide implementation of the patient safety agenda, liaising closely with aseptic services, MDT colleagues from clinical services, procurement and our wholly owned subsidiary, PharmaC.

You will be working within the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, providing excellent cancer care to patients across the North West (including North Wales and the Isle of Man). We have 3 site locations; the central Liverpool site and hub sites in the Wirral and Aintree. It is an exciting time for pharmacy as we have moved into our purpose built hospital, with state of the art aseptic facilities.

Working pattern will be 37.5 hours per week. Late duty, weekends, bank holidays and on-call will be part of the post.

Prior experience in oncology or haematology is not required as a full clinical grounding will be provided if required.

Main duties of the job

In this role you will work with the Deputy Director of Pharmacy, Director of Pharmacy, Principal Pharmacists and Technicians as well as medical and nursing colleagues to drive the medicines safety agenda Trustwide.

  • Leads and is responsible for the delivery and development of all aspects of the medication safety agenda across all wards and departments within The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. Acts as the Trust Medicines Safety Officer and guides the medicines safety group.
  • Interprets national and local agendas, and refocusing medicines clinical governance plans to deliver safe an effective Pharmacy and Medicines Optimisation services to patients under the care of The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre.
  • Develop, implement and monitor standards for safe and secure medicines use.
  • Develop education and training materials including reports relating to the management of medicines in the Trust and undertake research and audit to support innovative practice and sustain robust medicines management systems and processes.

Together, working across three sites and operating specialist chemotherapy clinics in four of Merseyside's district hospitals, we deliver a comprehensive range of inpatient care, advanced radiotherapy, chemotherapy and other systemic anti-cancer therapies including gene therapies and immunotherapies.

We also deliver a pioneering Treatment at Home and Work service, are the only facility in the UK providing low-energy proton beam therapy to treat rare eye cancers, and host the region's Teenage and Young Adult Unit.

Working with leading experts from the University of Liverpool, we strive to stay at the forefront of novel treatments and techniques to deliver more effective and personalised treatments.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Develop, implement and monitor processes to ensure the safe and secure storage of medicines in all areas throughout the hospital that hold medicines.
  • Work with the Clinical Services Leads to develop and implement safe standards of pharmaceutical care.
  • Lead and participate to investigations into medicines related errors, trends and incidents, providing a full action plan to drive improvement.
  • Interpret national and local agendas, such as safety alerts, and embed safe practices to ensure compliance.
  • Provides expertise to ensure the safe development of electronic prescribing systems.
  • Acts as Medicines Safety Officer for the Trust.
  • Chair the Medicines Safety Group subcommittee of Drug and Therapeutics.
  • Network with the local NW MSO group to identify and implement best practices.

  • Experience of working within oncology pharmacy
  • Experience of leading and managing change projects for service improvement

Experience

  • Experience delivering education and training, and providing supervision to support the development within a multidisciplinary team
  • Recent (in the last 2 years) evidence of delivering efficiencies within the NHS
  • Experience of working across organisational boundaries and managing complex stakeholder relationships
  • Experience of setting and delivery objectives

  • Non-Medical prescribing experience
