We have exciting opportunity for an exceptional individual/s to join our maternity team at Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching hospital as a Specialist Midwife for Perineal Pelvic Health.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated midwife/ midwives to join our outstanding team of supportive and dedicated Midwifery and Medical staff, helping to further the outstanding 5 star patient care provided by all.

Are you an experienced midwife with a passion for pelvic health and perineal care and a desire for improving services for women and their families accessing maternity services.

At Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching hospitals we are enhancing our service for pelvic floor dysfunction and provide, timely, evidence-based treatment for women.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated midwife/ midwives with significant clinical experience to provide leadership and service implementation within our maternity services.

You will need to have experience of change management and successful service implementation and be confident and competent in perineal suturing and care.

The role will involve training and support for staff as well as assessment, personalised care planning and onward referral working with the MDT team.

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

KEY DUTIES

To act as a significant educational resource in OASI, CRPT and pregnancy related bladder/bowel dysfunction.

To identify areas for improvement and to take a role in designing, implementing and supporting new and existing initiatives.

Provide a visible clinical leadership presence across the service.

Support improvements in and development of maternity services, to improve the experience for women, their families, and staff.

To review women in the postnatal OASI “one-stop” midwife led service, developing individual management plans.

Independently manage a case load, reviewing women in the antenatal OASI to discuss mode of delivery for subsequent pregnancy.

To provide and manage the care for women with pregnancy related bladder problems.

To work collaboratively with women’s health physiotherapy services, in providing midwife training and care for prevention of incontinence.

To work collaboratively alongside other clinical colleagues providing care to women with OASI.

To provide endoanal ultrasound tests for women with OASI and other non-pregnancy related bowel complications, as appropriate, providing feedback, recommendations and assurance to the patient and linking with other health care professionals as required.

To provide support and leadership to midwives on the postnatal and Intrapartum areas and across a variety of health professional groups, in developing their clinical skills for women with OASI.

To be responsible for organising and delivering perineal repair workshops to staff.

To independently lead and support the Perineal Review Clinic providing care to women with acute complications of CRPT in the post-natal period.

Responsible for establishing antenatal education materials and formalising care pathways required in line National and Regional PPHS recommendations.

CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintain Professional Registration and practice through CPD.

Adhere to NMC Code: professional standards of practice and behaviour for nurses, midwives and nursing associates.

Maintain personal standards of conduct and behaviour consistent with Trust and NMC guidance.

Provide expert advice on evidence-based practice in midwifery.

Influence maternity care to be the highest standard whilst exercising professional and personal autonomy.

Play a significant role in the identifying of potential improvements to working practices within the Pelvic Health Maternity service by leading on projects within areas of speciality such as:

Contributing to the development of care

  • Participating in designing protocols and
  • Developing and refining standard letters and communication
  • Working closely with I.T colleagues to improve clinical databases and patient information systems to maximise utility for the clinica
  • Identify and respond to opportunities to promote OASI and CRPT service within the service including creating local networks to facilitate service development e.g., within general practice, obstetrics, ante-natal care, midwifery and surgery.
  • Coordination between pelvic health services and community services that may include sexual health and mental health services.
  • Development and lead an effective day to day running of specialist programmes of care for specific patient groups with a multi-disciplinary team. This involves support of clinics for women who suffered Pelvic floor dysfunction and or at-risk groups who sustained an OASI or perineal trauma or perineal breakdown.
  • Review and maintain specific pelvic health guidelines to improve prevention recognition and treatment pelvic floor dysfunction.

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

Undertake Bleep holder documentation when participating in the Bleep rota.

Review the provision of evidence-based information for women and birthing people on pelvic health to ensure that it is widely available in a range of formats.

LEADERSHIP

Participate in the senior midwifery bleep holder rota on the Whiston site (Early or late shift including the occasional weekend or Bank holiday as required).

To provide support and information for midwives on the postnatal wards.

To maintain, monitor and evaluate standards of care provided to women with OASI and other childbirth related perineal trauma and to assist in the implementation of recommendations from Government or Professional bodies and CQC regulations in relation to their care.

Communicate regularly through meetings with teams and individuals and provide opportunity for two-way feedback.

Review and maintain specific pelvic health guidelines to improve prevention recognition and treatment pelvic floor dysfunction.

TEACHING & TRAINING RESPONSBILITIES

To attend annual maternity and mandatory training updates.

To deliver perineal repair training.

To provide training and support for all midwives and health care professionals on bladder care.

To provide training and support on PFME delivery in order to prevent urinary and faecal

Ensure that good pelvic health is promoted in pregnancy and the postnatal period.

Ensure that all staff in maternity services have access to first level training on prevention, recognition and treatment of pelvic health issues.

RESEARCH & AUDIT

To participate in nursing, midwifery and medical research and audit as required.

To lead and undertake audit of OASI and CRPT service locally and contribute to regional and national audit and research, presenting findings as.
