Job overview
This is a locum consultant post in Core General Urology. It is a whole-time (10PA) 12 month fixed term post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.
Applicants must be eligible for full Registration with the GMC at time of appointment.
Main duties of the job
- Provide a consultation and advisory service to other clinical colleagues in other specialities within the Trust and Primary Care.
- Participate in the development of the Urology service, treatment protocols and guidelines and the greater knowledge in the management of urological conditions.
- In time develop and implement day case bladder outflow surgery pathways
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialities and participate in regular clinical meetings and other post graduate activities.
- Participate in the urology on-call rota with consultant colleagues to ensure that appropriate emergency services are provided out of normal working hours.
- Make contribution to research and audit and in the development of trainee doctors within the speciality.
- Develop and maintain good communications with General Practitioners and appropriate external agencies.
- Demonstrate a firm involvement in clinical governance, risk management and clinical audit – this will include the development and maintenance of appropriate systems and practices to ensure continuous safe clinical practice.
- Ensure own practice is up to date; this will include taking responsibility for own Clinical Professional Development and participating in the Trust’s Performance and Review system.
- Cooperate and collaborate with clinical and non-clinical colleagues of the Trust to ensure the best care for the patients

Specialist Regional Services
We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
There are currently 13 substantive Urologists offering comprehensive Urological services including advanced endourology, reconstruction, robotic and laparoscopic upper tract surgery, female and functional, andrology and core urological procedures. They are supported by a large team of SAS doctors, trainee doctors and nurse specialists across the sites.
Urological services are provided across 4 hospital sites (Whiston, St Helens, Southport and Ormskirk) with consultants participating in an out of hours on call service covering all sites. This is supported by 2 separate middle grade rotas, each individually supporting an acute site (Whiston and Southport). A clinical transformation group in urology has been established to define the most effective model for delivering future urology services across the organisation. All consultants are committed to any future service reconfigurations which will improve patient care and are leading this process.
These are adult urology posts. However, when on-call the successful applicant will be required to provide emergency cover for basic urological emergencies such as suspected testicular torsion in boys over the age of 5 years of age (on the Whiston site). Any complex paediatric emergencies in children of any age or suspected testicular torsion in boys under the age of 5 years are referred directly to our tertiary paediatric urology centre, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- FRCS UROL. UK, or equivalent
- Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment
- Evidence of achievement of competencies by time of appointment in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Evidence structured urology training in endourology and laparoscopy
- Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
- Demonstrates the necessary range, depth and breadth of competencies in endourology and core urology
- Sufficient general knowledge and expertise to deal with core urological emergencies
- Upper urinary tract Laparoscopic skills
- Evidence of appropriate teaching experience
