Job overview

This post is for a Specialty Doctor in Trauma & Orthopaedics.  This is a 12 Months Fixed Term Post We are offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Specialty Doctor to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.

The successful candidate will be joining an enthusiastic, forward-thinking department compromising of 13 Consultants expanding to 18 in the summer of 2024. The appointment will be an essential member of the team.

The department offers excellent training and development opportunities and the post holder is expected to support the elective and trauma demand. We will also expect the new appointee to make significant contributions to our trauma workload.

 Applicants must be eligible for full Registration with the GMC at time of appointment.

Main duties of the job

The job plan is based on a 10 PA with on call commitments and the successful candidate will be working mostly with their allocated consultant(s). This translates to supporting the consultant’s PA’s including trauma, fracture clinics, general clinics, theatre sessions and ward rounds and there is time set aside for research, study, and administration. The job plan may be adjusted upon depending on the service requirements.

The post is offered on the basis that the successful applicant will work flexibly and as part of their routine duties will, with appropriate notice, undertake extended days, evening work and weekend work in line with EWTD.

Direct Clinical Care will include the following:

  • Outpatient Clinics
  • Operating Sessions
  • Clinical Administration / Ward Rounds

Supporting Activities

  • Audit
  • CPD
  • Teachin

The principles of the PA job plan will consist of:

  • DCC
  • SPA
  • Admin Session
  • Part of the trauma rota
  • Weekend and evening elective commitments
  • Part of the 2nd on call rota (Non-resident

Such activities should take place on site and continued payment for such activities (which are considered essential for relicensing) is dependent on the successful applicant(s) providing proof that the time allocated for such activities has been used to undertake said activities. 

The exact amount of time spent on such activities each week will vary with service demands.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To adhere to the NHS Constitution and its principles and values. Managerial accountability is to the Clinical Director.

Clinical & Professional Responsibilities

It is a requirement of the post that post-holders comply with Trust policies and procedures, have (and maintain) GMC registration / licensing and participate in a formal CPD programme.

The post-holders must also participate in regular medical audit and in annual appraisal and job planning with the Clinical Director or one of the other qualified appraisers within the Trust.

The post holder will have access to the trust mentoring scheme, and this has been developed in line with the NHS North West Mentoring Scheme network.  Newly qualified consultants will have access to mentoring from existing senior clinicians across the hospital.

Managerial accountability is to the Clinical Director.

Administrative Responsibilities

The hospital has a clearly defined programme of medical audit to which the appointee will be expected to contribute. All specialities spend one half day per month on audit and clinical governance. This occurs at the same time for all specialties, allowing an exchange of views between specialties and encourages multi-disciplinary audit. Audit occurs on a different half day each month, rotating from Tuesday morning to Thursday afternoon.

The hospital has a weekly grand round held in the Postgraduate Centre on Tuesday lunchtime. All disciplines take part on a rotational basis. The Centre has a purpose built lecture theatre, 3 seminar rooms and a library, including electronic databases and internet access. There is a varied programme of lectures and seminars and sub-specialty educational meetings.

The Trust has for decades been one of the three major providers of clinical training for undergraduate medical students from the University of Liverpool.

Teaching & Training Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be appointed a mentor. The substantive post holder will be expected to act as clinical/educational supervisor for one or more trainees. The trainees will usually be at FY2, ST1 or ST2 level.

Essential criteria
  • Applicants must be eligible for full registration with the GMC at the time of appointment
  • MB ChB or equivalent medical qualification
  • MRCS or equivalent medical qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate thesis

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Two years' experience of a broad range of medical/surgical specialties
  • Two years' experience of Trauma & Orthopaedics as a Specialty Trainee or has equivalent experience and competencies
  • Experience in Trauma & Orthopaedics Upper and Lower Limb
  • Experience of supervising Junior Medical Staff
Desirable criteria
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Trauma & Orthopaedics
  • Experience in audit management
  • Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Experience or ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems both emergency and elective within speciality
  • Experience or ability to contribute to the efficient and smooth running of specialist service
  • Experience or ability to organise and manage clinical priorities and deliverance of prioritised activity
