UK nationals or other persons with a right of abode have an eligible residency status if they have been ordinarily resident in the UK or the British Overseas Territories, or the Crown Dependencies (Channel Islands and Isle of Man) for at least the previous 3 years on the first day of the apprenticeship.

Job overview

We are seeking a values-driven Consultant Stroke Physician who can handle risk and ambiguity comfortably and can bring intellect and insight to leading complex services within the context of a wider health and social care economy. Providing clear structures of accountability which empower our capable staff to innovate and drive sustainable change, this role will require an exceptional communicator who will be politically astute and quickly able to develop strong relationships internally and with a wide range of external stakeholders. Main duties of the job

1. The post-holder will work closely with the other Stroke Physicians to provide a comprehensive Stroke Service. 
2. The post holder will be a member of the stroke team and will perform daily acute stroke ward rounds 
during the period of acute stroke physician of the week which will occur 1 week in 7 weeks 
3. The post holder will provide the senior medical component of the hyper acute stroke thrombolysis service and triage for the TIA Rapid Assessment service during the stroke week. 
4. The post holder will provide cover for the out of hours hyper acute stroke rota for assessment for 
stroke thrombolysis and remote hyperacute assessment/advice on a 1 in 7 basis. Provision will be 
made for compensatory rest to be taken on the day after any significant disturbance after midnight. 
5. The appointee will also be responsible for the ongoing care of the following inpatients 
• Arrowe Park Hospital Step Down Stroke ward rounds twice weekly on named patients on Ward 23average 8 patients, and advice for 18 beds
• Clatterbridge Hospital Stroke Rehabilitation Unit, average 5 beds 
6. The appointee will have 1-2 rapid access TIA / Stroke review clinics per week with access to same  day Doppler, CT and MRI imaging. The usual clinic template is 3 new / 6 follow up.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with General Medical Council
  • Member of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent
  • Entry on the General Medical Council Specialist Register via one of the following: a. Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or within 6 months of completion. b. Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR)
Desirable criteria
  • An appropriate higher degree, eg an MD, PhD or equivalent.

Skills and Requirements

Essential criteria
  • Good diagnostic skills
  • Broad experience of Medicine for the Elderly in Acute and Rehabilitation care and General Medicine
  • Additional experience in Stroke Medicine and able to provide hyperacute stroke care
  • Good communication skills
  • Evidence of professional updating
