Are you looking for an exciting opportunity? Wirral University Teaching Hospital is delighted to offer the opportunity to join our team within Emergency Medicine as a Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP). 

The successful applicant must be motivated and enthusiastic about Emergency Medicine. They should be able to demonstrate advanced communication skills, organisational and multi-tasking skills and have the ability to prioritise effectively and efficiently in a busy and fast paced working environment. The successful applicant must demonstrate an ability to support, teach, develop and educate others and possess good leadership skills. They should be able to work autonomously and work as part of a strong multidisciplinary team in order to maintain and deliver a high quality of care.

Arrowe Park Hospital Emergency Department:

Arrowe Park Hospital is the only Emergency Department on the Wirral. It provides 24 hours facilities for the care of the acutely ill and injured for a population of approximately 400,000. Approximately 96,000 new patients are seen annually. There are also several NHS Walk-in Centres and Minor Injury Units on the Wirral with which the department closely cooperate.

The department works closely with primary care services on site and operates a single front door for walk in adult patients.

The department is currently undergoing an Urgent and Emergency Upgrade Programme which provides exciting opportunities. The new Emergency Department is due to open in 2025!

Main duties of the job

The main duties of an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in the Emergency Department: 

  • The post holder will be an integral member of the medical team working collaboratively with nursing and allied healthcare professionals undertaking advanced roles and responsibilities traditionally the remit of junior medical staff under the direction of the Consultant in charge of the patients care.

  • Initiate and undertake preliminary investigations, under agreed protocols, following clinical assessment e.g. appropriate blood analysis, Chest x-ray, ECG, GI studies, and cardiovascular investigations.

  • Implement decisions made by senior medical staff.

  • Undertake advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures under agreed protocols.

  • Independently perform clinical review and formulate individual care and management plans.

  • Obtain consent for treatment/procedure as require

  • Complete discharge summaries to General Practitioner

  • Make appropriate referrals to specialties and professions allied to medicine both autonomously and on behalf of consultant

  • Undertake research and audit within the service as required.

  • Develop practice-based protocols to lead advanced level of professional practice in care

  • Implement  and   undertake   training   programmes   for   health professionals  using specialist knowledge and skill

  • Advocate health promotion strategies and modification of lifestyles/behaviour in terms of prevention of deterioration in disease process.

Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training

Essential criteria
  • The post holder will be a registered nurse with significant post registration experience
  • Have completed an MSc in Advanced practice
  • Have completed the non-medical Prescriber's Course (V300)
  • Maintain Advanced Life Support provider qualification
  • Attained qualification in clinical examination and clinical diagnostics

  • Ability to work effectively as part of the multi-disciplinary team
  • Will be able and willing to work across the emergency department rota including 24hour cover within the department
  • Provide evidence of and demonstrate clinical competencies acute medical management
  • Excellent communication and negotiating skills

  • Skilled to work across multi-agency and professional boundaries
  • Ability to motivate and develop staff and change practice in line with government agenda.
