Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Paediatric  Nurse  to join our established Paediatric Epilepsy Team as a band 6 on a 12 month secondment.

We are seeking a motivated, dynamic and experienced individual to join the Epilepsy Nurse Team. The post holder will work closely with the existing Paediatric Epilepsy Nurse and Paediatric Epilepsy Consultants to  develop the epilepsy service for Wirral in line with national guidelines and quality standards (NICE).

We run regular paediatric epilepsy clinics, as well as transition epilepsy clinics requiring Epilepsy Specialist Nurse support. Other clinical duties will include home, nursery or school visits, telephone advice, Paediatric Epilepsy Nurse Specialist led clinics, reviewing admitted paediatric epilepsy inpatient care, providing teaching/training and support for patients, their carers and staff. We deliver teaching for the junior medical staff, nursing staff and medical students.

 The post holder will be an excellent communicator and work in collaboration with various multidisciplinary teams. They should have experience in Children's Nursing and will have some understanding of the challenges of complex neurological needs and the have the commitment to increase their knowledge and skills within this speciality. The post holder will be required to support staff with teaching. 

 

Main duties of the job

  • To provide an expert “nurse led” service for children and young people with epilepsy
  • To work collaboratively with other health care professionals in contributing to service development which meets the needs of children and young people with epilepsy their parents and carers
  • Receive referrals from and make referrals to other members of the multidisciplinary team
  • Assess, treat and manage own caseload of patients referring on to other specialists as appropriate
  • Amend drug dosages in accordance with recommended guidelines
  • Take an active role in the development of epilepsy services
  • Work in accordance with Wirral Hospital Trust policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Act as an expert resource for the multidisciplinary tea

If successful in this role, there is a requirement for you to have a standard/enhanced DBS. This will be paid for by the Trust and then deducted from your salary over a period of 3 month. As this vacancy is within the division of Women’s and Children’s, there is a mandatory requirement for successful applicants to join the DBS update service. The cost of joining the update service is £13 per year, and applicants are liable to cover this cost with no reimbursement from the Trust. Further details of how to join the update service will be provided upon appointment.

Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training

Essential criteria
  • RSCN/ RN Child
  • Relevant diploma / degree
  • Appropriate post registration qualification/ Significant post registration experience as Primary Nurse or Equivalent
  • Minimum of three years post-registration experience of which two years should be at Primary Nurse or equivalent
  • Recognised teaching qualification
  • Evidence of involvement in producing teaching strategies/packages
Desirable criteria
  • NMC qualification as Nurse Prescriber, if appropriate
