Job overview

We are looking for a specialist pharmacist to lead service provision to the directorate of peri-operative medicine and support the pharmacy management team.

With an appetite for leadership and implementing change the candidate will work closely with anaesthetists, surgeons and divisional management across sites to ensure compliance with medicines management policies in theatres and elective surgical areas and continue to provide the excellent, award winning care the department is known for.

Recent achievements in the directorate include nominations in the Nursing Times and HSJ awards for the STAR project team, providing holistic care to patients with additional needs. ACS accreditation from the Royal College of Anaesthetists and GIRFT accreditation of the new CSMSC at Clatterbridge.

The successful candidate will be a self-motivated, organised person with excellent communication and interpersonal skills who can work effectively under pressure, both alone and as part of a team

Main duties of the job

Working closely with the surgical, anaesthetic, pharmacy, nursing and management teams, you will lead on improving how patient’s medicines are optimised during the peri-operative period.

Managing the pharmacy peri-op team and service across both WUTH sites;

Deputise for Lead Divisional Pharmacist- Surgery and Associate Director of Pharmacy- Clinical Services

·    Liaising with primary care working on pre-habilitation projects for elective surgical patients;

·    Helping the Trust implement processes and guidance to meet the GIRFT strategies for surgical specialties;

·      Developing, implementing and monitoring prescribing guidelines;

·      Financial monitoring of drug expenditure;

· Supporting the training and education of pharmacists, Medicines Management     Technicians (MMTs) and other healthcare staff;

·     Promoting the medicines optimisation and medicines safety agenda;

Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training

Essential criteria
  • Vocational Masters degree in Pharmacy or equivalent
  • Registered as a pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Diploma or MSc in clinical pharmacy or equivalent experiential learning
  • Extensive and recent clinical experience working as a clinical pharmacist within a range of clinical specialities.
  • Independent Prescribing qualification
  • Experience of developing evidence based clinical guidelines, policies and treatment protocols
  • Experience of multidisciplinary team working
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in management and supervision of other staff
  • Experience of education and training of other staff
  • Experience of undertaking, supervising and presenting audit and/or service evaluation, including at trust meetings
  • Published pharmaceutical research in a peer-reviewed journal
  • Member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society
  • Advanced Clinical Practice qualification
  • Royal Pharmaceutical Society Consultant Pharmacy Framework
