Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Neonatologist at Wirral University Teaching Hospital (WUTH). 

We are looking to appoint a colleague who will be part of an enthusiastic and friendly team in our Neonatal Unit which is one of the 2 neonatal units with level 3 status (NICU) in the Cheshire and Merseyside region.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will provide clinical leadership, setting standards of clinical care, offering professional advice where appropriate to Local Authorities, CCGs/PCTs and other commissioners, and promoting closer integration of primary, secondary and tertiary health care services for children.

The Consultant Neonatalogist provides clinical care for infants across all Wirral, as well as those infants transferred to Arrowe Park Hospital from within the Cheshire & Merseyside Neonatal Network, and from other Networks beyond. He/she also has a responsibility for developing innovative ways of improving their health.

If successful in this role, there is a requirement for you to have a standard/enhanced DBS. This will be paid for by the Trust and then deducted from your salary over a period of 3 month.

As this vacancy is within the division of Women’s and Children’s, there is a mandatory requirement for successful applicants to join the DBS update service. The cost of joining the update service is £13 per year, and applicants are liable to cover this cost with no reimbursement from the Trust. Further details of how to join the update service will be provided upon appointment.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MRCPCH by examination or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration and licence to practise
  • Inclusion in the specialist register in Paediatrics (neonatal medicine) or equivalent or paediatric CCT with adequate neonatal experience of working in tertiary neonatal unit
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree eg MSc, PhD
  • DCH, DCCH, MBA or other relevant diplomas

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 7 years postgraduate experience in paediatrics and neonatal medicine - of this 3 must have been spent in appropriate training posts in UK at a higher specialist level
  • Evidence of advanced clinical skills in neonatal medicine
  • NLS provider certificate or equivalent
  • Neonatal transport
  • Safeguarding
Desirable criteria
  • Current certificate as APLS, or PALS, ARNI instructor
  • NLS instructor

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of drive, enthusiasm, and a flexible approach
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a multi-disciplinary team
  • Competent to work unsupervised and make decisions
  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service
  • Ability to organise and manage the work of a neonatal unit, including outpatient clinics
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Understanding of management issues, clinical governance, service planning
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, eg report writing, thesis
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, eg project work, mentoring junior staff
  • Experience in the development of clinical guidelines
  • Experience of audit management
  • Management training

Academic

Essential criteria
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
  • Participation in research and/or clinical audit
  • Enthusiasm for teaching at all levels
  • Experience of presenting to audience using visual aids
Desirable criteria
  • Formal research training; demonstrated ability to design a research or audit project
  • Formal training in teaching methods; demonstrated ability in teaching/training
