The post holder will participate in the provision of a high quality and comprehensive Women’s, Integrated Sexual and Reproductive Health services as part of the multi disciplinary team, within the unit . 

The post holder will work within the Princess of Wales Hospital as required, and may be requested to work in other areas within service e.g.EPAU/GDAU.  

The post holder will be given the opportunity to acquire extra skills necessary to function as an independent practitioner.

The post holder has the freedom to act within established parameters, work is managed rather than supervised. The post holder is required to act independently within UHB and professional guidelines, referring to supervisory management as appropriate. This will include.

Responsibility for the management of resources in the absence of senior members of staff.  He/she will be responsible for ensuring that all resources within that area are used to an optimum effect.

Participate in responsibility for maintaining the standards of client care set by the department.

Ensuring that practice is in line with, and reflects the requirement of the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, and is based on evidence-based practice.

Ensuring that any personal and professional development plans reflect the requirements of the NMC and PREP.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Participate in services both on site and at satellite clinics if necessary.

  • Undertake phlebotomy.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Participate in the delivery of evidence based care and to ensure consistency and continuity in the quality of care.
  • Work in all areas of service provision including; Urogynae, Colposcopy, Fertility, Nurse led Prostat &  Pessary Clinic, Menopause, Scan clinics, Cancer Clinics ,Smears ,Hycosi's,  Biopsy's
  • Maintain stock levels for clinic rooms and order stock and equipment as required.
  • Demonstrate competent clinical practice and ensures compliance with Trust policies, local clinical guidelines and related legislation.
  • Promote and maintains high standards of health and safety whilst carrying out clinical practice.
  • Maintains confidentiality.
  • Promote and participates in departmental initiatives.
  • Promote and participates health promotion days
  • Maintain accurate clinical records as per NMC guidance and in accordance with policy be it paper or electronic.
  • Be responsible for maintaining the standards of care set by the department
  • Carry out clinical procedures within competence
  • Be responsible for the promotion of health and wellbeing of clients referred to the department addressing their individual needs
  • Be responsible for ensuring that all policies and procedures are observed
  • Be responsible for the support and supervision of junior staff
  • Liaise with the appropriate Multi-disciplinary teams i.e. Doctors, Senior Nurse, Team/Departmental managers and Practitioners, in relation to individual client requirements
  • Be responsible for the promotion of the health and wellbeing of all clients requiring care in any part of the service provision we provide within Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate client care in conjunction with multi-disciplinary team addressing individual needs.
  • Participate in evidence based care and ensure consistency and continuity in the quality of care
  • Participate in health education of clients
  • Be able to undertake a detailed client history for each area of service, communicating any identified problems to the appropriate member of the team. This will require long periods of concentration per span of duty.
  • Frequently be exposed to bodily fluids possibly during each span of duty e.g. blood, during operative procedures such as Colposcopy or hysteroscopy, vaginal secretions during screening procedures.
  • Frequently be involved in the breaking of bad news e.g. unintended pregnancy, miscarriage, positive test results, cancer diagnosis.
  • Advise and encourage clients and families to develop strategies to manage their own health.
  • Contribute to the ongoing support of clients and others significant to them, maintaining their interests, their identity and their well being
  • Be required to use IT equipment for clinical and clerical activities for varying times throughout the week e.g. client reports etc.
  • Inform and advise the Team Manager/Deputy of actual or potential problems with regard to clients, team members, etc, and where necessary, contribute to the appropriate action in resolving such problems on an ongoing basis.
  • Support the sickness management process by ensuring accuracy and efficiency of relevant documents and liaising with managers.
  • Be required to make decisions on care provided, making referrals as appropriate.
  • Provide accurate and concise risk documentation
  • Identify and report trends arising from clinical practice which may impact on the organisation
  • These may involve judgements involving complex facts or situations, which require analysis, interpretation and comparison of a range of options, for example; referring clients, management of individual client care etc.
  • Be responsible for organising their day to day workload delegating appropriate work to other staff e.g. Health Care Support Workers (HCSW), clerical assistants. This will include assisting in the supporting/teaching of HCSW, admin and clerical staff, student nurses etc.
  • Contribute in development and implementation of departmental objectives, which reflect past, and future UHB objectives.
  • Contribute to policy development
  • Plan care of complex cases in conjunction with medical/ nursing practitioners or the wider disciplinary team e.g. Termination of Pregnancy/miscarriage.
  • Participate in Nurse led service provision
  • Work in partnership, ensuring good communication with the multidisciplinary team, medical staff, nursing colleagues, administrative & clerical colleagues as necessary.
  • Provide information and guidance pertinent to the plan of care to clients presenting or referred. This will involve providing and receiving complex, sensitive or contentious information where persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training, empathic or reassurance skills are required.
  • Be involved in communicating distressing news to clients on a frequent basis
  • Be expected to participate in departmental meetings.
  • Provide clients with appropriate information ( written and verbal) at the appropriate time to enable them to make informed choices about their care
  • Pass on issues to the relevant team member as they arise to maintain effective working to meet service/client needs
  • Will act as a mentor/supervisor for student nurses, return to practice nurses, health care support workers as necessary
  • Prepare reports for managers as requested.
  • Give appropriate telephone advice to clients, referring complex issues when necessary.
  • Liaise with medical staff on behalf of clients as necessary.
  • Liaise with public health and other organisations when appropriate
  • Use electronic communication systems to facilitate effective communication such as email and fax messaging
  • The post requires moderately developed physical skills, where accuracy is important, but there is no specific requirement for speed
  • The post requires moderate bending and lifting throughout a period of duty e.g. taking swabs, assisting in operative procedures
  • Undertake venepuncture
  • Undertake cytology/screening procedures following a period of training, reporting any adverse reactions to the medical team.
  • Carry out duties in a variety of settings which requires travelling to various clinics the health board
  • Be expected to assist in the identification and achievement of training and development needs through the implementation of UHB policies and procedures.
  • Support the senior Nurse/Team Manager/Deputy and staff when skill mix reviews are being undertaken.
  • Participate, where appropriate, in the review of job descriptions for more junior staff.
  • Participate in the recruitment and selection procedures.
  • Act as a mentor for student nurses, return to practice nurses.
  • Have the opportunity to develop, through IPR, their own clinical and managerial skills to the benefit of the department
  • Ensure that UHB and Statutory Policies and Procedures are followed and implemented, and report any problems including proposing changes to working practices or procedures.
  • Be responsible for administration and recording of drugs, in accordance with the UHB Policy.
  • Be aware of individual responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act and identify and report, as necessary, any untoward accident, incident or potentially hazardous environment.
  • Ensure that they comply with the UHB’s Infection Control policies and procedures and undertake relevant training for any deficit in their practice and knowledge. Staff must take personal responsibility for their own actions in relation to infection prevention and control practices during their day to day work.
  • Be aware of budgetary implications when prescribing care
  • At all times, assist the Senior Nurse, Team manager/Deputy in the management of resources within their sphere of responsibility.
  • Have an awareness of budget and spending trends within the Directorate
  • Support the Senior nurse / Team Manager/Deputy with the evaluation and purchasing of equipment.
  • Ensure adequate stocks of supplies and equipment and their safe storage.
  • Provide accurate, current comprehensive and concise records concerning the condition of the clients, in accordance with the NMC Standards for Record & Record Keeping and the Health Board’s Patient Record Policy.
  • Ensure that personal information for patients, members of staff and all other individuals is accurate, up-to-date, kept secure and confidential at all times in compliance with the Data Protection Act 1998, the Caldicott principles and the common law duty of confidentiality
  • Be required to access computerised and written information, which informs care e.g. Myrddin, Lillie, Avalon Radis etc.
  • Be expected to provide evidence based care, participate in audit, supporting and implementing any necessary changes in relation to patient care.
  •  Be expected to participate in research, interpretation and analysis of findings and their application to practice
