Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 3 Health Care Support Worker to join the team in Ward 14, Coity Clinic. The successful candidate should have a genuine interest in caring and supporting individuals with severe mental health problems and have a compassionate and empathetic approach. 

Ward 14 is the acute admissions and assessment ward for adults in Bridgend with severe mental health problems who are in need of inpatient care and treatment. The role of the Band 3 HCSW is to support the registered nursing staff, and supervise Band 2 HCSW staff in the assessment process of patients admitted to the ward. HCSWs also support in the daily provision of care and treatment, in line with the patients' individual needs.

The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with the qualified staff to ensure that a high standard of care is maintained across the ward, and  be expected to demonstrate a genuine interest in this field of nursing, displaying  excellent people skills such as communication.   They will be expected to work as part of a team, ensuring the delivery of high quality person centred patient care.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role involves observing patients on the ward and reporting to the nurse in charge any significant information or changes to patients' mental state; engaging with patients to develop therapeutic relationships; and supporting patients in managing their acute distress.  Band 3 HCSWs will also support and supervise Band 2 staff.

Working in Ward 14 provides opportunities to gain specialist knowledge and develop skills in supporting people with a range of mental illnesses and associated challenges. 

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Essential criteria
  • A good standard of general education including literacy and numeracy skills. Must posses NVQ level 3 or equivalent level of competency assessed training

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in a mental health setting.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with adults with Serious Mental illness

Essential criteria
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal; Ability to work on own initiative; Ability to work as part of a Team; Ability to keep calm in stressful situations; Ability to demonstrate a person centred approach
  • Must be able to undertake Formal Restrictive Physical Intervention Training with annual up -dates
