Job overview

We are delighted to offer this opportunity to join the Cardiology Department at Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board as a Consultant Cardiologist.

This is an exciting opportunity to join our passionate and enthusiastic team and to play a key role in developing and improving the provision of cardiac services based at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate professional excellence and the ability to deliver effective care, will be required to adhere to the Trust’s policy on Maintaining Medical Excellence and be committed to maintaining their standard of performance by keeping their knowledge and skills up to date.

Applicants wishing to apply for this post should possess the MRCP or equivalent, be GMC-registered with a license to practice and hold specialist registration in Cardiovascular Medicine or be within six months of specialist registration at the interview date.

English and/or Welsh speakers are both equally welcome to apply.

Interview Date: 10th September 2024

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work with a team of 5 other consultant cardiologists at the RGH to support one ‘general cardiology’ firm with appropriate junior medical staff support and will also support an established specialist arrhythmia nurse service.

The working timetable will involve 1 week in 6 of ‘ward’ work (during which time the appointee will be the consultant responsible for the care of cardiology in-patients and will support referrals from non-cardiologists (with no elective duties during the ‘ward’ week). The other 5 weeks will involve outpatient and largely elective cardiology work dependent on the individual skills and experience of the successful applicant.

Inpatient workload as ‘cardiologist of the week’ is in the order of ~20 in-patients, as well as dealing with in-patient referrals and providing e-advice to GPs. There is currently no formal out of hours and weekend cardiology commitment although this is being reviewed in the light of the new Health Board, however, the Cardiologists currently support weekend acute medical services.  A candidate accredited in acute/general medicine will be favored and if successful would join the acute weekend rota, currently ~1 in 20 weekends (Saturday and Sunday basis with no acute medicine on calls during the week). During the ‘non-ward’ week the successful candidate will undertake a weekly average of 2 clinics (following standard RCP guidance on numbers per clinic) and 2-3 cath lab-based work (elective and acute).
