Job overview

The main duties include preparation, labelling and data entry of clinical specimens for biological testing which have to be undertaken with care. It will be advantageous to have worked in a laboratory environment previously and some IT experience would be of benefit.

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Pathology Department at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital for a Medical Laboratory Assistant who will be trained to work within our combined reception area, providing support to the Blood Sciences laboratory.

The applicant should have a good standard of general education and excellent written and verbal communication skills. Applicants should be able to demonstrate an attention to detail and an ability to learn new tasks.

The post-holder will be required to handle biological specimens, e.g. blood, faeces, urine, in accordance with Directorate Health & Safety Protocols and Standard Operating Procedures.

The department is UKAS accredited to ISO 15189 and is an accredited IBMS training laboratory.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To receive, sort, check and bar code a variety of biological specimens.  This is performed in a laboratory environment with many interruptions but you will be expected to perform these duties with maximum concentration.  You will also be required to perform these duties using the personal protective equipment provided to ensure safety when dealing with the hazardous patient samples.

All tasks should be performed following Health and Safety and Standard Operating Procedure guidelines.

To accept specimens from patients and clinicians which arrive directly in the Laboratory and ensure correlation between the specimen and request form. The post holder will decide upon, and take appropriate action when required, to resolve any anomaly. 

The post holder will be required to identify sample urgency and to act accordingly by ensuring these are fast tracked.

To input patient/specimen details for a variety of test requests from clinical sources into the Laboratory computer system using various formats.

The post holder will prepare these labelled samples for laboratory testing and where appropriate perform such procedures e.g. glucose tolerance tests.

The post holder will be required to perform manual tasks such as lifting large sample racks as well as storing supplies and emptying waste containers.

The post holder will be required to perform the maintenance of some laboratory equipment e.g. centrifuges, fridges, blood gas analysers.

Will perform general housekeeping duties e.g. decontamination of equipment and laboratory benches and replace sharps containers as and when required.

Due to the nature of the job a high degree of dexterity and multi-tasking ability is necessary.

Responds and deals with enquiries both clinical and non-clinical appertaining to the department. These may be from clinicians, patients or patients relatives.

Will perform a variety of laboratory based tasks, is required to handle biological specimens and will have patient contact via telephone calls and direct patient contact when undertaking glucose tolerance testing. These duties must be performed in a caring, tactful and professional manner.

Receives, sorts, checks and barcodes a variety of biological specimens, ensuring correlation and resolving any anomaly.

Undertakes some specimen processing. Will be required to identify sample urgency.

Has responsibility for the preparation, labelling and data entry of clinical specimens for biological testing. The post holder on rotation is solely responsible for tests performed in other laboratories or organisations. This will entail identifying the request and the off-site laboratory, packaging the sample and ensuring correct storage requirements, planning and organising transportation. Will organise their own work duties.

Requires a high degree of dexterity and multi-tasking when attending to urgent specimen arrival via the pod system. Must be computer literate with good keyboard skills.

Will be expected to operate expensive and sophisticated equipment. Is required to maintain various stocks.

Will be required to confirm that the glucose analyser is working correctly.

Ensure that test results are correlated and entered into the computer system.

Enter patient data into the computer system.

Will be expected to adhere to UHB policies and procedures.

Will be required to demonstrate own role to new starters and less experienced staff.

Will be required to participate in departmental audits where necessary.
