Job overview

The post holder will work as part of a multi skilled team Grounds & Gardens team within the Health Board Facilities Regions and will provide a range of daily grounds and gardens maintenance service through a range of horticultural work practices gained through knowledge experience and training.  The Grounds & Gardens Team  contribute to partnership working by working to support the Health Board in delivering goals and objectives by supporting continuous improvement in performance.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work under the Grounds & Gardens Supervisors supported by the professional guidance of the Grounds and Gardens Manager and accountable to Senior Facilities Manager and undertake horticultural and gardening duties through all Regional Sites within the Health Board to support the efficient operation of the Grounds and Gardens Team within Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board.  This will include supporting effective communication to work as part of a team, sometimes across all Health Board Regional Sites, the operation and knowledge of various machinery, attending course internally/externally and delivering physical work in varying weather conditions that will include participation in snow clearing and gritting during adverse/winter periods

As part of the Grounds & Gardens team you will be required to regularly cut and maintain lawned areas across Health Boards Sites that are not contractually maintained. To support weeding and maintenance throughout each Health Board Site. To trim, prune flowers, trees (to include ivy growing up) and shrubs in accordance with good gardening practice and to prevent foliage overhanging pathways, roadways, drainage gullies and manholes etc.

You will be required to detect and deal with common plant diseases and pests.

The post holder will work as part of the team who will support Litter Picking / Site Appearance, Vermin Disposal (dead rats) but to include notification of pest problems (wasps, flies etc.).

Post holders will be required to comply with COSHH guidelines and adherence to promote safe work practices for pesticides, fuels, other substances within this remit.

Candidates are required to hold a Full driving license essential to support role and post holder will be expected to work across each Site as within the Health Board

Undertake driving duties in accordance with license instruction and appropriate training where required. Driving will include the requirement to drive and operate department vehicles, plant machinery in accordance with vehicle regulations and training.

 

Undertake work in sometimes unpleasant conditions such as extreme weather, inclement weather, occasional hazardous areas. Safety measures must be adhered to at all times to ensure safe working practises adhered to. 

Undertake work in accordance to schedule, maintenance schedule that requires physical effort for often long periods at a time.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Basic Knowledge of Gardening
  • COSHH training and awareness
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ L1 or L2 Horticulture or equivalent gardening subject
  • Recognised Trade Apprentership in Gardening
  • Certificate of Groundsmanship / NPTC Craft Certificate

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous Gardening and Horticulture Experience
  • Previous grounds & maintenance experience in a commercial environment
  • Previous experience with gardening tools such as strimmers, lawn mowers, hedge cutters etc.
  • Previous experience of maintenance and compliance with Safe Systems of Work and Risk Assessments
Desirable criteria
  • Previous 4x4 vehicle experience
  • Basic experience of tractor & larger petrol mowers
