Job overview

 

This post will join the team of consultants responsible for the provision of acute surgical services to the Local Health Board in Cwm Taf.  The post will be part of the Trauma and Orthopaedic (T&O) Team and provide support to the on call rota based at Royal Glamorgan Hospital.   The post arises due to a vacancy in the higher specialist training scheme for T&O.  The post holder will be required to support the delivery of outpatient, inpatient and emergency services for the local population and in doing so foster excellent working relationships within and outside the specialist area, including medical, nursing, secretarial and support staff, General Practitioners and Management Teams.

Main duties of the job

Specialty Doctor - Trauma & Orthopaedics

Relationships

The successful candidate will be one of a number of Doctors who will be supported by a team of consultants, middle grades, junior doctors and Nurse Practitioners.

 

The role will cover all aspects of T&O admissions working at Middle Grade level.   This is an ideal opportunity for candidates who wish to gain wider experience in the specialty in an acute setting. The post holder will be required to work as one of the middle grades on the on call rota. 

 

A wide range of general experience is a requirement, and special interests, which compliment existing services, will be supported.

Role

  • To enhance services within the Clinical Services Group.
  • To assist in team building across all Clinical Service Groups and teams.

Clinical Sessions include:

  • Outpatient Clinics
  • Theatre Sessions
  • Ward Rounds
  • Pre Operative Assessment
  • Post Operative Assessment
  • On-call

There is a 1:6 on call commitment on a middle grade rota.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GMC Registration with a license to practice
  • MRCS or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • FRCS or Equivalent

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Experience of UK NHS Hospitals, systems, practices.

Research/Training

Essential criteria
  • Proven experience in Audit and Research.
Desirable criteria
  • Track record (Publications/ Presentations) Higher qualification/ courses in Research / Audit

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience at T&O middle grade.
  • ATLS and ALS certified
  • Experience of on call duties at this level.
Desirable criteria
  • Worked at middle grade in Acute General Surgery Department.

Personal skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to communicate well with colleagues, patients and relatives.
  • To be flexible and work as part of a team to meet the needs of the service.
  • High degree of motivation, self-starter.
  • Ability to organise and prioitise workload.
  • Ability to cope with stressful situations, including clinical crises and make sound clinical judgement independently
Desirable criteria
  • Able to motivate and lead.

Management

Essential criteria
  • Experience of organising on call rotas.
Desirable criteria
  • Specific management training/ courses or qualifications.
  • Experience in managing junior staff and organising theatre lists etc.
