Senior Clinical Fellow (Higher Level) in Lung Cancer - Full Time (40hours)

Duration: 6 months with potential to extend to 12 months

Anticipated Start Date: Immediate 

An exciting opportunity has arisen as a Senior Clinical Fellow  in Lung Cancer within ABUHB. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to gain experience in the investigation and management of patients with suspected Lung Cancer.  They will gain experience of all aspects of the investigation, management and co-ordination of the care of patients with lung cancer. The post holder will attend clinics and learn to assess new patient referrals, arrange appropriate investigations and discuss results in follow-up clinics. There will be the opportunity to attend bronchoscopy, Endobronchial Ultrasound and Thoracoscopy procedure lists and participate actively with increasing experience. Attendance at the weekly Lung Multi-Disciplinary Team Meeting will be incorporated into the weekly rota and an anticipation that the Fellow will present cases and discuss management decisions in that forum.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will provide support to the lung cancer service, enabling a development of skills specific to the investigation and management of patients with suspected lung cancer. Five consultant respiratory physicians are part of the lung cancer service. The service adopts a weekly attending Lung Cancer Physician of the Week (LCPOW) consultant who co-ordinates the service on a rotational basis, reviewing referrals, providing  clinical advice to referrers and preparing cases for MDT discussions which they subsequently chair. The post holder will support the LCPOW and will be actively involved in their ongoing investigations, interpretation of results and care.  The post holder will support other members of the extended Lung Cancer Multi-Disciplinary Team such as junior doctors and nursing staff in the management of all patients he/she is involved with, answering specific queries on patients with the supervision of consultant staff.  

This post of is designed for trainees who want to make a commitment to respiratory medicine and in particular the sub-specialty of lung cancer. The post will provide excellent experience in Lung Cancer investigation and management and organisation of this service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidates will have training in respiratory medicine and access to a variety of accredited training courses, under the supervision of RCP trainers. ABUHB will be highly flexible to the needs of individual candidates towards their career progression such as obtaining MRCP (UK) and CESR in line with the service requirements. ABUHB has a very good track record with high MRCP (UK) pass rates and training courses for MRCP PACES examination. There is dedicated fund to support with training which will need to be discussed with your RCP trainer. Audit and QI projects will be a requirement of the post and the post is supported by a dedicated research lead based in Cardiff University for anyone interested in research. 

All the posts have a resident on-call element, the frequency and acuity is dependent on the hospital which will you be joining. Although irrelevant to the site, all on-calls will attract an attractive supplementary banding payment.
