Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join an excellent Emergency Department team in a Trust that genuinely sees Emergency Medicine as a major priority.

The Department has a very up to date 4 bedded Resuscitation area and opened a new, purpose built Majors department 12 months ago. Plans are in place for a complete re-design of the rest of the department to provide a modern, minors and paediatric department.

We have an award-winning Acute Medicine and Ambulatory Care unit situated right next to the ED, with very good relations between the Emergency and Acute Medicine teams.

Main duties of the job

1. To provide 24 hour Emergency Medicine presence, with Specialty Doctor and Registrar colleagues.
2. To treat patients as they arrive in conjunction with Trainees.
3. To provide support and guidance to Trainees.
4. To participate in the educational and audit activities of the department

Working for our organisation

The Team is friendly and dynamic and these posts are part of a planned significant expansion in senior Medical Staff numbers. We currently have 9 Consultants, 1 Associate Specialist, 12 Registrar/Specialty Doctors and 15 Junior Doctors, supported by additional locum shifts.

We have a separate GP streaming service which sees 40 patients per day which would have previously been seen by the Emergency Department.

We have a very good working relationship with the Trust Executive, who share our vision of a thriving ED delivering excellent clinical care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The appointees will take an equal share in the duties, clinical and non-clinical, of the department with their Specialty Doctor colleagues. While on duty Specialty Doctors are expected to be in the department, or if on a break, nearby. There is no on-call room as the night duties are rostered as full shifts.

Subject to the provisions of the Terms and Conditions of Service to observe the Trust’s agreed policies and procedures drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters and to follow the standing orders and financial instructions of the Trust.

To observe local and national employment and personnel policies and procedures, and to comply with Regional and Trust Health and Safety policies.

To assume responsibility for and facilitate contact from members of staff with delegated duties for personally accountable patient care.

As a Department we are flexible with regard to working patterns and will strive to come up with a job plan that suits your own personal circumstances. The standard job plan is for 12 PAs, of which 1.5 is SPA.

There is a CESR programme running within the department enabling experienced doctors to gain the competencies, and experience via secondments, required to achieve CESR. This is run by a consultant who has been successful in a CESR application which provides invaluable support and experience.

We are committed to helping each of our specialty doctors achieve their own personal goals, whether that is by developing a special interest within Emergency Medicine (teaching, ultrasound, paediatrics etc.), obtaining FRCEM and/or CESR or simply enjoying a good work-life balance. We can arrange experience in other specialties (anaesthetics/Intensive Care/ Paediatrics/ Acute Medicine/ Orthopaedics) in order to meet the requirements for CESR and give one-to-one teaching for FRCEM from an established FRCEM examiner.

A relocation package is available, and overseas experience will be recognised in the entry point to the Specialty Doctor pay scale on an individual basis.

Reasonably priced hospital accommodation may be available on site.
