Applications are invited to for the post of Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with an interest that compliments the service to join our friendly and supportive team at the James Paget University Hospital. This modern District General Hospital has approx. 500 beds and is situated in a coastal holiday area of East Anglia. It serves a population of 250,000 that increases considerably in the summer months.
There are around 1,800 births each year at James Paget.
The Consultant team has recently been expanded and we are recruiting into the 3rd of 3 additional posts to support the development of the Obstetric and Gynaecology service providing care to women in the Great Yarmouth and Waveney area.
This post will increase the Obstetric and Gynaecology Consultant team from 11 to 14.
The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the Obstetric and Gynaecology on-call rota and applicants will be required to undertake a full Obstetric and Gynaecology commitment to so we are looking for an applicant with good Obstetric skills who can commit to the provision of high quality Obstetric care. We would welcome an individual with the drive and ambition who will continue to develop a multi-disciplinary approach to support the further development of the service, particularly applicants who would be willing to undertake a leadership role.
Main duties of the job
The postholder will share the Obstetric and Gynaecology workload with Consultant colleagues, including out-of-hours responsibilities with a Consultant on-call rota.
The weekday on call commitments are currently 1:12, with 1:10 cover at weekends. This will be reviewed by the team once we have recruited into the additional posts.

The historic city of Norwich is only 20 miles with excellent schools, rail links to London and an international airport, for easy access to the Continent and beyond.
Our Trust is also on the path towards developing a new hospital over the coming years, working closely with the Department of Health and Care to deliver a modern, innovative health and care campus on our current site as part of the national New Hospital Programme.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Share with consultant colleagues the Obstetrics and Gynaecology workload.
- Out-of-hours responsibilities, including participation in Consultant on-call rota where applicable;
- Hold a lead role within an area of Obstetrics in line with clinical governance requirements within the department.
- Undertake Gynaecology in an area of special interest to the candidate, if desired and that fits in within the department.
- Cover for colleagues’ annual leave and other authorised absences;
- Give a consultation and advisory service to medical colleagues in other specialities in the Trust.
- Liaise with medical staff in other specialities and participate in the regular clinical meetings and other post-graduate activities of the hospital.
- Take part in the Royal College of Obstetrician & Gynaecologists Continuing Professional Development. The Trust will provide study leave expenses in line with national terms and conditions of service.
- Play a full part in the teaching and audit activities of the department.
- Participate in the trust’s appraisal process and attend mandatory training.
- Participate in the Trust’s Clinical Governance processes.
- Contribute to management of the service and, in due course, take on roles of responsibilities within the department.
Person specification
Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MBBS or Basic Medical Degree
- MRCOG or equivalent
- Hold a certificate or being within 6 months of completion of training or being on or eligible for the UK Specialist Register at the date of interview.
- Full GMC Registration
Desirable criteria
- MD/PhD
Experience & Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Ability to provide expert clinical opinion across a wide range of problems within the specialty of General Obstetric and Gynaecology
- Ability to exhibit leadership and management skills and participate in developments within the division
- Willingness to participate in and lead a multi-disciplinary team, balancing department and personal objectives
- RCOG Advanced Labour ward practice ATSM or equivalent
- Ability to manage obstetrics and emergency Gynaecology independently
- Experience in High Risk Pregnancy
Desirable criteria
- Experience of committee work/project management
- Experience in leading preterm prevention one stop clinic
- Experience in conducting service development projects in Obstetrics
- Experience in leading multidisciplinary management of mental disorders in pregnancy.
- Participate in the TOP service
- Advanced laparoscopic surgical skills
Academic Achievements
Essential criteria
- Ability to use research outcomes in clinical practice
- Familiarity with conducting clinical audit
- Knowledge of using evidence base medicine to support decision making
Desirable criteria
- Involvement in research projects and published papers
