The James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust serves a population of around 250,000 people in the Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft and Waveney areas. The Trust provides an integrated hospital and community children’s service.

To work as an autonomous practitioner assessing and treating own caseload of Orthoptic patients.  Opportunities to develop skills in extended roles within the wider Ophthalmology team, for example intravitreal injections, Glaucoma, low vision.  Applications are welcomed from both newly qualified and experienced orthoptists.  Newly qualified Orthoptists will be supported through the preceptorship programme.

To accept clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients and to organise this efficiently and effectively with regard to clinical priorities and use of time. To ensure a high standard of clinical care for the patients under your management.

To undertake the comprehensive assessment and diagnosis of patients, including those with a complex presentation e.g. thyroid eye disease, cranial nerve palsies, maxillofacial injuries.

Provide Orthoptic assessment of ophthalmic emergencies as and when required and incorporate into booked clinics.

To communicate effectively with patients and carers to ensure understanding of ocular condition. Utilise communication skills of persuasion, motivation, explanation with a wide variety of patients.  There may be cases where there are barriers to effective communication e.g. special needs children, babies, patients with hearing loss or those in pain.

To formulate an individualised Orthoptic treatment plan using clinical reasoning skills and utilising a range of treatment options in order to formulate a programme of care.

Provide instruction to patients/parents/guardians on a continuous course of home treatment.

To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your own work.

Demonstrate significant manual dexterity and speed to ensure accurate results, especially in infants and young children.

Ensure a high degree of accuracy in using specialist equipment to gain accurate measurements necessary for patient management e.g. preparation for surgery.

Administer eye drops if required, in compliance with approved patient group direction, reporting any untoward reactions and taking appropriate action.

Keep knowledge and skills up to date and maintain a continuing professional development portfolio.
