We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 3 Medical Secretary to join our Obstetrics and Gynaecology Medical Secretarial team within the Division of Surgery and Women's & Children's Services.

Main duties of the job

The Medical Secretary role is a highly diverse, demanding but rewarding role, working as part of a friendly, and enthusiastic team. It is essential that the successful applicant has proven secretarial experience, accurate and efficient audio typing skills and excellent organisational skills to book theatre lists to a high standard.  You should also have a keen desire to develop and learn new skills.

The Medical Secretary role involves validation to review and update patient pathways on ipm to ensure it is reflective of the management of the patient.  Appropriate training, clear priorities and guidance will be given to support validation work.

The successful candidate will have the confidence and enthusiasm to take on the challenges of this role and experience to manage a busy workload. Applicants must be organised, have the ability to work under their own initiative and be able to prioritise a competing workload.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the team in managing clinical pathways, booking and scheduling patient appointments, typing clinics, dealing with telephone queries, managing and administrating results, dealing with post and supporting the delivery of the RTT targets for the department; in accordance with National and Trust guidelines. Flexible working may be required in order to meet the needs of the service.

Essential criteria
  • Typing qualifications to RSA II or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of medical terminology/AMSPAR qualification
  • Good general standard of literacy and numeracy

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Previous digital/audio typing experience
  • Secretarial experience in a clinical environment
  • Working knowledge and experience of using Microsoft Office packages, including Word, Outlook, Excel
  • Working knowledge and experience of using NHS systems
