Job overview

Based in our Pharmacy Department's dispensary, you will act as the responsible pharmacist, ensuring that Trust and pharmacy policies and procedures are adhered to. A high level of leadership is required for this role, in providing efficient support within our Pharmacy department.

Within this role, you will work in conjunction and collaboration with the Clinical Pharmacy Leads, Lead Pharmacy Technician in Dispensary, and others in the wider team to deliver an efficient, high quality, professional and well-coordinated  support service that meets and helps to maintain exemplary standards of patient care.

Main duties of the job

  • To be the responsible pharmacist for the dispensary, ensuring adequate pharmacist cover is available as required and to problem solve during periods of staff shortage
  • To work with the Lead Pharmacy Technician Dispensary to maintain dispensary SOPs and ensure adherence to their content.
  • To work with the Lead Pharmacy Technician Dispensary to train new dispensary staff including use of the pharmacy computer system.
  • To provide professional advice and support to trainee pharmacists and other dispensary staff
  • To take professional responsibility for the clinical screening of prescriptions to ensure the accuracy, legality, safety, and effectiveness of prescribed medication in line with pharmacy SOP
  • To identify potential risks to patients when screening prescriptions and resolve relevant issues prior to dispensing
  • To liaise with doctors and nurses to resolve any queries arising from the screening process
  • To provide advice on the safe prescribing and administration of medicines
  • To participate in stock review, including controlled drugs and ensure medicines are kept safely and securely
  • To destroy controlled drugs in the dispensary, working under the authorisation of the controlled drug accountable officer.

Qulifications, training and professional development

Essential criteria
  • Master’s Degree in Pharmacy or equivalent
  • Registered member of the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Mandatory CPD to maintain fitness to practice
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Independent Prescribing
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical or Technical Pharmacy or equivalent demonstrable experience to enable instruction of other Pharmacists at specialist / higher level

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial post-registration experience in hospital clinical practice or equivalent relevant area of practice experience
  • Demonstrable experience of service development including management and objective setting for other members of staff
  • Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Proven record of leadership and communication skills
  • Ability to analyse problems and develop and implement practical solutions
  • Able to manage a complex workload; being able to cope with interruptions requiring an immediate response.
Desirable criteria
  • Advanced IT skills - good analytical skills, able to assimilate, interpret and present complex information from a range of varied sourcesitoring and advising on drug expenditure

Skills, abilities, and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of relevant local and national standards and regulations associated with the provision of medicines optimisation
  • Knowledge of the financial and clinical governance of High-Cost drugs
  • Willing to participate in weekend, evening, Bank Holiday, and on-call rotas as required
