Job overview

Clinical or Counselling Psychologist to work in a Community Learning Disabilities Team, on a band 7 with a preceptorship to band 8a, based in Lowestoft, Suffolk on a substantive full-time basis.

The North Suffolk Community Learning Disabilities Service is seeking applications from Registered Practitioner Psychologists to join our dedicated and welcoming team. This is an exciting opportunity for clinicians to contribute, and to gain experience, knowledge, and skills in working in the field of learning disabilities.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will provide psychological input to adults with learning disabilities and their carers. We utilise a community team based structure, working alongside a range of disciplines and partner agencies to provide a flexible and responsive service.

The postholder will also have opportunities for developing specialist interests in the field of learning disabilities. Services are delivered in various localities across the catchment area and travel will be expected. Within the Learning Disabilities Service there is a strong team of experienced clinicians who have a range of specialist interests and expertise. Peer and individual supervision are provided and CPD is highly valued.

The postholder may be required to provide clinical supervision, depending upon experience.

Based in Oulton, near Lowestoft, the location offers the lifestyle benefits of the beautiful Suffolk coast and Broads National Park.

We have close links with the University of East Anglia from whom we take clinical psychology trainees on a regular basis.

Applicants qualifying in 2024 and those not yet eligible for salary band 8a will be considered. (If appointed as such you would be on Band 7 with a preceptorship arrangement).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The full job description is attached. The postholder will provide a high quality specialist clinical/counselling psychology service for people with learning disabilities with associated mental

health and behavioural problems, across the North Suffolk area. This will involve specialist assessment and treatment with evidenced based approaches. Although based in Oulton, travel and a full driving will be required due to the rural nature of the catchment. The successful applicant will work autonomously within professional guidelines, given appropriate supervision. At times, the post holder may be required to contribute psychological insights with regards to the

design and implementation of organisational planning and service developments. Accurate patient record keeping and care planning is an essential aspect of the role, via the Trust’s electronic patient record. Supervision of junior colleagues may be required as part of the role. Teaching, training and the sharing of psychological insights are also important aspects of the post.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Batchelors of Science (BSc) Degree in Psychology at grade 2:1 or above
  • Post-graduate Doctorate Degree (or its equivalent if trained prior to 1996) in Clinical Psychology, accredited by BPS
Desirable criteria
  • Masters of Science (MSc) Degree in Psychology
  • Additional training in one or more specific areas of psychological practice. (For example ACT, CBT, DBT etc.)
  • Additional training in healthcare related topics. (For example, Lorenzo electronic patient record, data protection, Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act etc.)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with a variety and severity of patient groups and clinical problems, in community, clinic or inpatient settings.
  • Able to maintain a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems.
  • Experience of work with complex and challenging behaviours and delivering psychological care and treatment.
  • Experience of delivering psychological input (including as a clinical psychology trainee) within Learning Disabilities Service settings (clinical contexts)
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of clinical work in learning disabilities specialist settings relevant to this post.
  • Experience of presenting and teaching psychological topics to workforce in healthcare settings.
