Biomedical Scientist - Histopathology

NNUH is currently the busiest Trauma Unit in the East of England caring for almost 850 trauma patients annually many with complex care needs. We are enhancing our urgent and emergency care specialist services for patients with significant injuries as a result of trauma and have an ambition to become a Major Trauma Centre.

A post is available in the Histopathology Department, which forms part of the Cellular Pathology directorate.  Histopathology receives and processes patient (tissue) samples to provide diagnostic reports to hospital clinicians and General Practitioners.  This post presents an opportunity to be part of an excellent team working in a busy, modern hospital laboratory. The department has a workload of around 60 000 surgical requests per year and covers a wide range of routine and specialised services. The service is also has Biomedical Scientist advanced dissection roles and is also developing Biomedical Scientist reporting roles. The service has a specimen tracking system and is developing digital pathology reporting.

 This is an excellent opportunity to work with a committed team of office, laboratory and Consultant Pathologist staff. The department encourages active professional development and further educational activities.

You will play a key role in the following areas:

·         Work as a BMS in all specialist areas of the lab, including, the dissection/reception, section cutting/embedding, special staining, and immunocytochemistry/molecular services.     

·         Carry our frozen sections and Mohs frozen sections.

·         Support band 7 staff, including staff/workload supervision, staff training and quality control.

·         Help support staff training and quality control/improvement.

On-call cover on rotation for state-registered BMS staff.

You will gain experience in all specialist areas of the laboratory work is carried out.

You will also play a key role supporting band 6 specialist BMS staff.

This is an excellent development opportunity, trainee staff will be able to complete the IBMS registration portfolio. Registered BMS staff will have the opportunity to work towards the IBMs specialist portfolio. Further training opportunities can be provided.

  • BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent.
  • Registration portfolio from the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (IBMS) or equivalent (Working towards for trainee role)
  • Hold registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) or working towards for trainee role.
  • Be a member of the IBMS

Skills
