Apprentice Receptionist - AMU

We are very proud of our Apprentice success rates, with 92% of Apprentices successfully obtaining a substantive post within the Trust at the end of their Apprenticeship contract, and 98% of Apprentices having further plans in place following their Apprenticeship e.g. going on to further education, joining the NNUH staff bank or obtaining employment at another organisation.

Apprenticeship Eligibility Criteria:
All applicants must be:
- Aged 16+
- Resident in the UK/EEA for the last three consecutive years
- Must not have a qualification in a similar subject at the same level or above
- Must not be in any form of formal government-funded education upon the start of their apprenticeship
Qualifications and Skills Required:
- Good general standard of education
- 4 GCSE’s at Grade D/3 or above (or equivalent) subject to the job specification
- Good standard of literacy and numeracy
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Good IT skills
Full time: 37.5 hours per week

AMU is part of the emergency service running 3 Units side by side as well as offering a same day emergency care service which receives internal and external referrals for patients to be seen, assessed, have investigations, and discharged within the same day to assist with admission avoidance.
We are looking for a friendly and enthusiastic person who would like to make a difference working frontline in a role which is at the heart of the NHS. You will work alongside our receptionists, nurses, and other allied professionals. This role will include working in a busy team and a busy hospital, meeting and greeting patients and relatives as the first point of contact. Providing telephone coverage, admitting patients using the relevant computer systems and update as necessary for the duration of the patients stay whilst on AMU, and other general receptionist duties.
As a team and as a department working within one of the largest hospitals in the UK in terms of inpatient capacity, we strive to provide the best experience to all from the initial first greeting to the end of the patients journey within AMU always demonstrating the NNUH’s pride values.

- Prepare patients case notes and make available in a timely fashion.
- Making up patient admission packs in advance of admissions, including producing duplicate label sets, preparing wrist bands and obtaining patients case notes.
- To assist in keeping records up to date by using IT hospital systems – Pas, Symphony and Web-ice in line with the Trust User Policies.
- File and prepare Patients Case Notes on Discharge – in order to prepare clinical coding form for patient episode and ensure it is completed by medical staff on a daily basis.
- Arrange where appropriate follow-up outpatient appointments.
- Have a full awareness of admission procedures and regulations for Overseas Visitors are met including EC patients and act upon.
- Answer incoming non-medical telephone calls in a professional manner and deal with them appropriately. To use the fax machine as and when required.
- Where appropriate after liaising with the doctor inform deceased patients GP to advise of the patient’s death in hospital.
- Provide good communications with other departments (i.e. X-ray, Health records etc.)
- Following hospital policy ensure the safe keeping of patient’s property and valuables.
