NNUH is currently the busiest Trauma Unit in the East of England caring for almost 850 trauma patients annually many with complex care needs. This is a fixed term contract for either: 24 hours per week for 52 weeks or 37.5 hours per week for 36 weeks.
An exciting opportunity has arisen as Clinical Lead Physiotherapist to work within our Oncology, Haematology and Palliative Care Physiotherapy Team based primarily on Mulbarton Ward at NNUH. You would be responsible for leading the development of the physiotherapy service to this group of patients, in line with local and national guidance, informing ongoing acute care planning alongside our therapeutic skills supporting mobility and function to manage and prevent deconditioning for our patients during their inpatient stay.
As post holder you will:
- be expected to provide education on and facilitate rehabilitation for appropriate patients at all stages of the cancer pathway, in line with current evidence and the Survivorship agenda and living beyond cancer. This also includes supporting the regular ‘Nourish and Nurture’ out-patients groups via the Big C Charity Centre site.
- provide Clinical Leadership to the Cancer Care arm of the Neurosciences and Cancer Care (NS&CC) Physiotherapy Team.
- work within a team of Physiotherapists, Integrated Therapy and Physiotherapy Assistants undertaking a variety of clinical and non-clinical tasks to support the delivery of physiotherapy services.
- offer specialist clinical support to senior and junior staff and students, delegate workload and coordinate teaching opportunities.

As post holder you will be required to:
Assess, prioritise and manage a caseload of patients requiring physiotherapy intervention within these specialties
Participate in the discharge planning process; making recommendations about individual rehabilitation needs and discharge requirements including facilitating holistic palliative discharge planning; participate in multi-disciplinary meetings, board rounds, case conferences and family meetings.
Train, supervise and performance-manage physiotherapy assistants; rotational physiotherapists and physiotherapy students on clinical placement within the specialty
Provide clinical leadership within the specialty including educational, professional and managerial guidance.
Have an active role in the planning, development, coordination, delivery and evaluation of the physiotherapy service provided to oncology, haematology and palliative care patients
Our clinical caseload is hugely varied and embedded in a culture of education, development, and service improvement. Excellent communication skills and a willingness to develop yourself and your other team members are essential.

- Experienced physiotherapist with highly specialist skills responsible for the physiotherapy management of patients presenting to the relevant service/team within the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
- To be the clinical lead physiotherapist responsible for a defined area of work as specified in Appendix 1 (where relevant).
- To be an expert clinical resource for the physiotherapy management of patients presenting to the relevant specialty, both within the Trust and regionally, as required.
- To represent the physiotherapy service as a clinical expert in initiatives both within and outside the Trust as requested by the Physiotherapy Services Manager or Physiotherapy Service Lead.
- To be responsible for an individual caseload including prioritisation, assessment and management of patients with a range of acute and chronic conditions. Relying on expert clinical judgement and using highly analytical skills, to determine clinical diagnosis and treatment. To maintain records as a legally autonomous practitioner.
- To provide a leadership role clinically, educationally, professionally and managerially.
- To have an active role in the planning, development, coordination, delivery and evaluation of the physiotherapy service provided to patients within and out-reaching from the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
- To deputise for the Physiotherapy Operational Lead/Integrated Therapy Lead/Service Lead as required.
- To support the delivery of a high quality, safe and compassionate healthcare service, all staff are expected to act as a role model to others in all aspects of their work and consistently demonstrate NNUH’s ‘PRIDE’ values of People focused, Respect, Integrity, Dedication and Excellence and demonstrate behaviours that support and encourage an inclusive culture.
- To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own work.
- To maintain a high standard of clinical care for patients.
- To accept clinical responsibility for the physiotherapy management of a defined caseload of patients and to organise this efficiently and effectively with regard to clinical priorities and use of time.
- To provide peer support and case review for other members of the team, in particular, in relation to patients with complex clinical/psychological presentations.
- To use communication tools (verbal and non-verbal) and assess understanding of treatment proposals to gain valid informed consent. To work within a legal framework with patients who lack the capacity to consent to treatment.
- To collect relevant patient information from a variety of sources e.g.radiology imaging systems, other investigations to assist with clinical prioritisation and patient management. This may also include ward handovers, observation charts, medical and nursing records etc.
- To undertake the comprehensive specialist assessment of patients using investigative and highly analytical skills.
- To make a clinical diagnosis based on presenting signs and symptoms.
- To formulate an individual management and/or treatment programme using advanced clinical reasoning and a wide range of treatment skills and options relevant to clinical specialty.
