Nursing Associate - Day Procedure Unit

NHS AfC: Band 4

At NNUH it is our privilege to provide healthcare to over one million people across Norfolk and surrounding areas. Our vision is to ‘provide the best care for every patient’, and if this inspires you and you share our values, we really want you to join our team.

NNUH is currently the busiest Trauma Unit in the East of England caring for almost 850 trauma patients annually many with complex care needs. We are enhancing our urgent and emergency care specialist services for patients with significant injuries as a result of trauma and have an ambition to become a Major Trauma Centre.

Our values support our vision and guide the behaviour of everything we do, these are:

People-focused

We look after the needs of our patients, carers and colleagues, to provide a safe and caring experience for all.

Respect

We act with care, compassion and kindness and value others’ diverse needs.

Integrity

We take an honest, open and ethical approach to everything we do.

Dedication

We work as one team and support each other to maintain the highest professional standards.

Excellence

We continuously learn and improve to achieve the best outcomes for our patients and our hospital.

Wish you were here? So do we.

We want all our staff to achieve a balance between work and personal life and understand how important flexible working can be.  We welcome applications on a full or part time basis, various shift patterns and hybrid working, where roles allow.

At the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NNUH), we know the benefits diversity can bring to our organisation such as creativity, innovation and compassion. All of which have a direct impact towards our staff and patient experience. We are committed to being a Hospital for All – being equitable and inclusive, and a place where all feel a sense of belonging. We therefore particularly encourage and welcome applications from candidates who are underrepresented in NNUH’s workforce. These include people from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, people with diverse abilities and people within the LGBT+ community.

Job overview

The Day Procedure Unit Ward team at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital is part of one of the major elective surgery Units in East Anglia, treating an approximate 14,000 patients in 2019, and playing a vital role in the elective surgery recovery plan since COVID-19.  Following the Nationally recognised British Association of Day Surgery Directory, the ward is continually reviewing and expanding its services to more patients with greater complexity of procedures. We are currently looking for a part-time Nursing Associate to join our lovely team in our busy day surgery ward.

Our Trust’s values of People focused, Respect, Integrity, Dedication and Excellence are very important to us:

Supporting the Trust PRIDE values means having the ability to communicate in a personable, approachable, and respectful manner to patients and colleagues. We support the development of instant and positive relationships within the Day Procedure Unit ward environment and strive to facilitate everyone to work inclusively and collaboratively with our colleagues in surgery. Our baseline objective is to always provide excellent care to our patients. The highest level of integrity and honesty is expected and feedback from the monthly Family and Friends audit confirm the vast majority of respondents value the care they receive.

Our manager welcomes any requests to visit the unit, providing enough notice is given. Please come along and meet the team if you are interested in applying to DPU ward.

Main duties of the job

As part of the ward team, there is opportunity to work with all members of the multidisciplinary team, to experience being part of a team that provides patient-centred day surgery care delivered with dignity, respect, and compassion.
The ward embraces the opportunity for staff development, and the individual will gain knowledge and skills in enhanced practices such as venepuncture, ECG and catheter care as well as learning about nurse-led admission and discharge clinical criteria under the Get It Right First Time.

Staff will work collaboratively within the team, both independently and with direct supervision from the coordinator. They will work closely with the requirements of Trust and Departmental policies and procedures to ensure that patients receive the care as required.

The main objectives of this post are:

  • Assisting in the admission, post-operative care and discharge of the surgical patient during their admission to the Unit.
  • Moving and transferring patients on trolleys and beds, with the minimum discomfort to the patient.
  • Supporting the staff in providing safe, high-quality care in an appropriate environment and assisting in core positioning and comfort of the patients.
  • To support the delivery of a high quality, safe and compassionate healthcare service, all staff are expected to act as a role model to others in all aspects of their work and consistently demonstrate NNUH’s ‘PRIDE’ values of People focused, Respect, Integrity, Dedication and Excellence
