To work as part of the General Surgery team in order to support and provide a comprehensive service within the Trust

Accountable to:

Consultant General Surgeon

Clinical Lead for General Surgery

Other Specialty Doctor colleagues

 

Consultants and Speciality Doctors in other surgical and medical specialities, Junior Medical Staff, Nursing Staff, Clinical Director, Assistant Director and other members of the Planned and Surgical Care Management Team

 

Key tasks:

·       Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management and care given of patients

·       Day to day management of surgical patients under Consultant General Surgeon’s care

·       To undertake theatre lists on surgical patients under the supervision of a Consultant General Surgeon

·       To be part of the 1 in 10 week on-call rota

·       Assisting with teaching and training of junior staff and medical students

·       To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit

·       To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME)

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To work as part of the General Surgery team in order to support and provide a comprehensive service within the Trust.

Direct Clinical Care

 

The post holders will provide support in the following areas:

 

3.1      General

 

·       Day-to-day management of general surgical patients under general surgery

 

·       Care of out-patients, including the conducting of clinics under the supervision of a Consultant General Surgeon.

 

·       To undertake theatre lists on general surgical patients under the supervision of a Consultant Surgeon.

 

·       The post-holders are expected to participate in the management of the department, especially in ensuring that appropriate deputising arrangement(s) are made, when necessary, and supervising the day-to-day clinical work of the junior staff in the department.

 

·       The post-holders are encouraged to pursue research projects which will lead to publication of scientific papers.

 

·       The post-holders are expected to be committed to maintaining a high standard of note-keeping and communication with General Practitioners.  He/she will be involved in preparing information for entry to the hospital's Clinical Information System and in preparing Discharge Summaries of patients under the care of the consultant for whom he/she is working at the time.

 

·       Any other duties commensurate with the grade which may be allocated from time to time.

Supporting Professional Activities

 

  • Participate in and contribute towards the teaching programme of clinical and non-clinical staff e.g.; journal clubs, tutorials, lectures, clinical meetings. May need recognised training approval from the Clinical Tutor/College for training junior doctors.

 

·         Keep up-to-date records to satisfy continuous professional development requirements. Assist in Trust clinical risk management requirements.

 

  • Contribute to clinical audit projects. Work within the clinical governance framework as agreed with the Trust.

 

  • Undertake research, if desired, as directed by supervising consultant for the directorate.

 

  • Clinical Management duties as delegated and agreed by the lead clinician or clinical director.

 

  • Ensure regular appraisal is held with supervising consultant in accordance with Trust policy.

 

  • Adhere to the Trust Infection Control policies and procedures

 

3.2     Job Plan

 

A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointees and the service’s Clinical Lead, on behalf of the Medical Director, and Service Manager, three months after the commencement date of the appointee.  This will be signed by the Chief Executive and will be effective from the commencement date of the appointment.  The total number of PAs allocated to each post is 11.

 

The job plans will then be reviewed annually, following the appraisal meeting.  Appraisals are conducted 12 months after appointment where for newly appointed Specialty Doctors or 12 months after the previous appraisal if appointee has previously worked as a Specialty Doctor.  The job plan will be a prospective agreement that sets out a Specialty Doctor’s duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year.  It should cover all aspects of a Specialty Doctor’s professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities.  It should provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external.  In addition, it should include personal objectives, including details of their link to wider service objectives, and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives.
