Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist

NHS AfC: Band 7

Job overview

This role offers an exciting opportunity to be the SLT lead for the SLT community neurology team in Harrogate and Rural District. You will provide highly specialist assessment and treatment to adult community neurology patients with a wide range of communication and/or swallowing difficulties. Highly specialist skills are required for the management of patients with complex difficulties which often include progressive neurological presentations.

You will be part of the motor neurone disease MDT, leading on the SLT service development within this area and attending MDT meetings. You will also be the SLT lead for community neurology and will be part of the wider neurology service.

The majority of your clinical work will be visiting patients in their own homes and therefore requires you to do domiciliary visits and have your own car.

You will have the opportunity to refer into the weekly videofluoroscopy clinic, so competence/experience in this area is beneficial.

There is a large part of leadership in this role and you will work closely with the team lead to support specialist SLTs and an SLTA within the team with training, supervision and line management of the team.

The job split is likely to be 1 day of leadership and 2 days of clinical work.

Main duties of the job

The post will enable you to continue to develop your highly specialist skills within a supportive team structure, with regular supervision and the opportunity to contribute to the development of the service.

The role includes:

- Assessment and treatment of adult community neurology patients with communication and swallowing needs, often with complex presentations (e.g. progressive neuro)

- Leading the adult community neuro SLT team

- Being part of the MND multidisciplinary team, attending meetings and leading in this area for SLT (including service development)

- Being part of the wider neurology service, attending meetings and leading in this area for SLT (including service development)

- Providing support, supervision, training and line management of SLT as required

- Ensuring continuous service development, evaluation and governance within the team
