Locum Consultant in Urology
Full Time - 10 PAs per week
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our dynamic team here in Harrogate as a Locum Consultant in the Urology Department.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate should be listed on the Specialist Register (or within 6 months of CCT) and have FRCS (Urol) or equivalent. They will be expected to share the responsibility for the day-to-day running of the department with colleagues and maintain the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.
All Urological surgery, inpatient and outpatient services, are provided at Harrogate District Hospital, except for those outpatients seen at, Wetherby and North/West Leeds outreach clinics. There are five main theatres. There is also a Day Surgery Unit with two general theatres.
There is a combined Intensive Therapy and Surgical High Dependency Unit with a total of ten beds which are managed by a lead Anaesthetist.
Working for our organisation
The Department of Urology is well established with strong governance and protocols. Team work flourishes, with good communication within the core and wider teams. Junior doctors report good experiences of working in a happy and cohesive team. Teaching and training is high on the agenda, with monthly combined Journal clubs and governance meetings.
The Urology service is currently led by Mr Chris Mahon General Surgeon (Group Clinical Lead). The Urology team are supported by a Clinical Director, an Operational Director, General Manager, Service Manager and Matron for the Planned and Surgical Care Directorate. The team are also supported by corporate functions including Human Resources, Information Services and Finance.
The Urology department has a close alliance with the Urology department at St James’ University Hospital in Leeds.
All Harrogate outpatient services, including haematuria clinics are provided in a dedicated Outpatient facility in close vicinity to the Emergency Department.
Pre operative assessment is well established within the Urology department and is a nurse led service. Nurse led follow up and telephone follow-up has been in place for a number of years and is encouraged and supported by the Urology team.
The trust is now paperlite utilising WEB V, EPMA, ICE as electronic patient records.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview
- FRCS (urol)
Desirable criteria
- Postgraduate thesis
- Completed fellowship programme
- ATLS
Clinical experience
Essential criteria
- Experience requisite to meeting all aspects of the job plan
- Ability to maintain clinical credibility and authority with a multi-professional team including senior trainees
- Understanding of all aspects of specific focus of role
Desirable criteria
- Five years supervised training in an appropriate SpR equivalent training programme
Management & administrative experience
Essential criteria
- Ability to effectively organise and manage clinical workload
- Knowledge of NHS structures and management arrangements
Teaching
Desirable criteria
- Demonstrable ability as a teacher with evidence of training for the role
Research
Essential criteria
- Ability to convert research evidence into clinical practice
Desirable criteria
- Publications in peer reviewed journals
