Are you an experienced, Accredited Clinical Coder (ACC) looking for the chance to develop your operational and managerial skills? Come and work for the York and Scarborough coding team, where we hit our freeze deadline on the first day of the working month and our depth of coding is in the top quartile nationally. 

At York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the clinical coding department sits within the Digital Information Service and provides a timely and accurate clinical coding service.  A team of trained coders translate clinical documentation for approximately 15,000 inpatient spells per month into data that describes diagnoses and interventions for all consultant episodes. Encoded clinical data is submitted to NHS England on a monthly basis and its uses include but are not limited to; national tariff reimbursement, healthcare planning, commissioning services, development of national policy and epidemiology.  The team provides internal audit and training programmes and seeks to work closely with clinicians and corporate colleagues alike to provide continual improvement in data quality.

The Clinical Coding Team Manager provides operational management for the clinical coding department, ensuring that all national and internal deadlines are met in a timely manner. 

Main duties of the job

The key responsibilities of the Clinical Coding Team Manager are to:

  1. Manage the clinical coding service and clinical coders.
  2. Undertake long-term planning for the clinical coding service.
  3. Undertake clinician engagement to implement coding improvement which increase data quality.
  4. Undertake clinical coding audits, and/or deliver training. 

This role may offer: Hybrid home/on-site working accommodated, with consideration given to requests for fully-remote working in some circumstances. However please note it is a requirement that Identity and Qualifications documents are checked in person and therefore you may be required to attend an appointment at either York or Scarborough Hospital.

Person specification

Education, qualificatoins and training

Essential criteria
  • Holds the National Clinical Coding Qualification (NCCQ) with Accredited Clinical Coder status
  • Degree level education or equivalent experience
  • Managerial qualification or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
  • Has completed the Clinical Coding Standards Refresher Course within the last 12 months
  • Is an NHS England Approved Trainer or Auditor

Experience and knowledge required

Essential criteria
  • Can demonstrate ‘standards exceeded’ coding accuracy levels as set out in the Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT)
  • Knowledge of HRGs
  • Knowledge of national benchmarking systems relevant to clinical coding e.g., CHKS/HED and metrics such as SHMI/HSMR
  • Knowledge and experience in applying a wide range of HR policies and procedures
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of delivering formal clinical coding audit or training programmes
  • Experience of delivering organisational change

Aptitude and personal qualities

Essential criteria
  • Possesses well-developed influencing skills in order to persuade colleagues at all levels in relation to transformation/improvement initiatives
  • Works well independently and as part of a team
  • Diplomatic and able to de-escalate issues arising within a team environment
  • Understanding of patient confidentiality and good information governance practice
  • Coaching Skills
