Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for the post of Assistant / Relief Medical Secretary within the Cardiac Rehabilitation Team, based at Clementhorpe Health Centre, York.

We are seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and flexible individual, who can work effectively whilst using their own initiative. The successful candidate will be an important part of our forward-thinking Team who help and support patients following various cardiac events.

The post holder will provide administrative support to the service lead and the team of Cardiac rehabilitation specialist Nurses.

Main duties of the job

Excellent administration/secretarial skills and audio-typing experience are necessary, as well as a good communication skills. You will regularly be required to deal with queries from patients, consultants and GPs and use electronic work lists to actively monitor patient pathways. General administrative tasks such as minute taking, data inputting and use of excel spreadsheets are required.

The successful candidate will be required to work well under pressure, with the ability to prioritise the demands of a busy office and manage their time and workload efficiently and effectively.  They will also be required to work unsupervised and communicate with other service users on a regular basis.

Person specification

Education

Essential criteria
  • GCSE English Language, Grade C or above (or equivalent)
  • Word processing skills – OCR II (or equivalent e.g., RSA II)
Desirable criteria
  • ECDL

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of using a variety of IT applications, including Microsoft Office
  • Minimum 6 months secretarial/administrative experience
  • Experience of working in a customer focused environment
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • NHS Experience

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Proficient audio typist with the ability to accurately transcribe complex audio tapes and type complicated medical information whilst subject to frequent interruption
  • Ability to cope with distressing and emotional situations with patients, relatives and staff
  • High level of interpersonal skills, including sensitivity, diplomacy and empathy
  • Ability to assimilate new practices and knowledge
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to exercise judgement and resolve problems
