Job overview

We are looking for a confident and motivated Operational Manager to work within Acute Medicine and the Emergency Department  based at York Hospital.

Your portfolio will  include supporting the medicine care group  together with a role in day to day operational management across our busy wards and departments. 

You will be an experienced, visible and compassionate leader, supporting operational, administrative and clinical teams to deliver high quality care.

You will have an interest in service improvement and will be a responsive and autonomous colleague.

The post will provide you with an opportunity to work closely with colleagues across the multi-disciplinary team enhancing care pathways, managing service performance and ensuring timely access to acute and planned care. You will benefit from the support of your peer managers, clinical and nursing leads and the senior management team.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for a portfolio of operational management duties including service performance monitoring, complaint and patient experience management, service planning and line manager responsibilities for direct reports. 

The post holder will report to the Care Group Senior Operational Manager and work in partnership with senior colleagues within the Care Group and the wider Trust to ensure delivery of the portfolio of services and activities within a clinically and financially sustainable model.

Essential criteria
  • Good communication, presentation & interpersonal skills
  • Performance management skills.
  • Strong prioritisation skills with the ability to manage competing demands
  • Able to influence, negotiate and build working relationships.
Desirable criteria
  • High degree of report writing skills.
  • Aptitude to be a self-starter in keeping up to date and increasing depth knowledge of the agenda for designated services

Experience & Knowledge Required

Essential criteria
  • Experience of management in the NHS, including operational management , budgetary management and service improvement
  • Knowledge and awareness of NHS Plan & Targets
  • Knowledge and awareness of Organisational Development methods
Desirable criteria
  • Experience as well as knowledge of all activity targets and managing waiting lists

Education, Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Graduate/Degree level qualification or equivalent expereince

Aptitude & Personal Qualities

Essential criteria
  • Sensitive to staff issues.
  • Active and passionate interest in and good knowledge of NHS issues at the current time.
