Job overview

York site with another enthusiastic colleague. This prospectus should hopefully provide you greater insight about the fantastic team at

The post is for an Upper Limb Surgeon with a specialist interest in Hand & Wrist. The current working model includes a 1 in 10 rota covering a trauma intake providing an in-reach and referral service to other
Surgical Wards and the Emergency department. There is dedicated daily trauma list capacity for the prompt management of trauma to
complement a 24/7 rota, supported by an experienced multi-disciplinary orthopaedic team.

Job plans will be reviewed at least annually, following an appraisal meeting.  The job plan will be a prospective agreement that sets out a consultant’s typical working pattern, duties and responsibilities and objectives for the coming year.  It will cover all aspects of a consultant’s professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities and external commitments.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking a fellowship trained hand and wrist  surgeon to join the current team of upper limb surgeons .  

The post holder will have a 10 PA job plan consisting of 8 clinical sessions 2 SPA sessions. Whilst some of the sessions will be at fixed times during the week, the requirements of this post mean that there will be a need for the post holder to adopt a flexible approach to their weekly commitments. Weekly activity will be confirmed at least 6 weeks in advance.  

This post carries a 1:10 on call & trauma commitment. The on call rota is split into 2 separate blocks – Monday to Thursday & Friday to Sunday. During on call time the post holder is responsible for the management of all acute Orthopaedic admissions & trauma lists. Elective activity during this time is cancelled. The post holder is expected to adhere to the Directorate guidelines on consultant responsibilities during on call weeks & demonstrate good communication with colleagues for the handover of patient care, when appropriate. No leave should be taken during on call time unless appropriate cover arrangements have been made, agreed & approved by the Clinical Director

On appointment of the post holder, the Clinical Director will commence discussions to finalise the job plan which will become operational on commencement.  

Additional programmed activities may be offered to the post holder, up to a maximum of 2 for full time posts, taking the maximum total to 12.

 

Working for our organisation

The York Department currently consists of 14 orthopaedic surgeons providing on call, trauma and elective services at York Hospital. All of the surgeons and middle grade doctors perform some of their clinical work on a seconded basis at the local Independent Sector Treatment Centre (Clifton Park NHS Treatment Centre). Theatre activity will take place at York Teaching Hospital, with outpatient clinics split between the York Hospital site & the Clifton Chapel site. We have a 30 bedded trauma ward, a 25 bedded elective ward, and a busy outpatient department adjacent to A&E, together with a separate outpatient facility in nearby Clifton. There are four dedicated orthopaedic operating theatres with laminar flow – one trauma, two elective and one day case located in the Day Treatment Unit. We have an established multi-disciplinary team working alongside the surgeons, including Extended Scope Physiotherapists and Advanced Nurse Practitioners.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The principle duty of this post is to provide a comprehensive clinical service to patients within the trust area.

  1. To, at all times, comply with the GMC requirements of Duties of a Doctor
  2. To ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained at all times.
  3. To undertake duties as defined within the attached job plan in so far as practicable and in agreement with your clinical director.
  4. To be responsible and managerially accountable for the reasonable and effective use of any Trust resources that you use and influence, and professionally accountable to the Medical Director.
  5. On commencement to ensure personal attendance at the Trust’s Corporate Induction.
  6. To participate in the Trust’s statutory and mandatory training programme
  7. To fully participate in the Consultant Peer Support Scheme and ensure personal attendance, when invited, at the Consultant Development Programme during your first year in post.
  8. To be responsible for the clinical management of in and out patients under your care.

 

Teaching & Training

 

  1. To share responsibility with other Consultants for the recruitment, appointment and supervision of junior medical staff in accordance with Trust policies.
  2. To devote time on a regular basis for teaching and training of junior medical staff, contributing as appropriate to post-graduate and continuing medical education.
  3. To devote, through agreement time on a regular basis for teaching and training of medical students as part of agreed teaching agreements with Hull York Medical School.

 

Management & Governance

 

  1. To be responsible for the management, appraisal and discipline of junior doctors who are attached to you, after taking appropriate advice, were appropriate.
  2. To maintain personal and professional development. The post holder will be expected to register with their respective Royal College for the purpose of CME/CPD and to fulfil the requirements of that registration.  
  3. To provide advice, as required, to the Executive and Trust Boards and to General Practitioners and other interested parties, on the provision and planning of clinical services locally, regionally and nationally in keeping with confidentiality agreements relating to Trust business.
  4. To co-operate in the present agreed framework of management arrangements in York.
  5. To fully participate in clinical governance arrangements across the Trust including participation in clinical audit, research (where appropriate), pursuing an agreed agenda with colleagues and the Trust Board and fully co-operating in implementing the results in order to achieve best practice.
  6. To participate, on at least an annual basis in consultant appraisal and job planning reviews.
  7. To comply with Trust policies and procedures where appropriate.
  8. To ensure that all intellectual property rights of the Trust are observed.

Person specification

Qualificatons

Essential criteria
  • GMC Specialist Register in Trauma & Orthopaedics
  • ATLS
Desirable criteria
  • BSSH or European Hand Society Diploma
  • Substantive NHS Experience
  • MSc or equivalent Higher Degree or evidence of relevant research

Clinical Practice / Competence

Essential criteria
  • Ability to demonstrate clinical experience and skill in Trauma & Orthopaedics with a specialist interest in Hand & Wrist surgery
  • Knowledge of good medical practice and hte GMC requirements
Desirable criteria
  • Fellowship experience in Hand & Wrist surgery
  • Experience of working in or setting up a hand surgery service

Mentoring & Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching undergraduate and post graduate trainees
  • Is able to work effectively in spite of pressures
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of supervising SpRs/specialiast trainees
