The role will manage Capital teams across both Kettering and Northampton Hospital sites.

This post is a key role within our Estates & Facilities department. The UHN Capital Projects Team deliver an array of £multi-million Capital Programmes, consisting of New Build, Backlog, and Refurbishment projects - delivering priority projects linked to Trust strategy and addressing Estates statutory compliance.

The post holder will also be responsible for strategic planning and delivering service improvement across Capital, Estates, and Facilities; working with a wide range of stakeholders to create and share the vision for the portfolio delivery approach; promote and embed the principles of good project management and supporting the organisation in delivering the change required to achieve strategic objectives.

We are looking for applicants ideally from an architectural, surveying, construction, engineering, building or project management background with a proven track record in the Estates field delivering.

Main duties of the job

The role involves providing expert construction management advice as well as direct support to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Contribute to strategic development of Trust Wide Estate.
  • Establish effective management systems.
  • Prepare Business Cases and Board Reports.
  • Manage project costs and risks.
  • Deliver quality projects on time and within budget.
  • Implement Departmental policies.
  • Support operational commissioning of Health Service buildings.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be responsible for leading their Capital teams; building and standardising robust programmes and project management arrangements, which includes:

  • Mapping a systematic and clear approach for delivery;
  • Working with system partners and contractors to agree roles, responsibilities and
  • Ensure that the capital programme is actively managed and that linkages between organisations, people, timescales and actions are clear;
  • Identifying risks and developing credible and proportionate mitigations that are agreed and owned by the most appropriate leads;
  • Ensure that benefits realisation is practiced with key performance indicators developed for each programme and assessed as part of the monitoring framework;
  • Proactively identify issues where escalation may be required in order to unblock constraints or to overcome challenges;
  • Horizon scan to ensure that the post holder and the team are kept up to date with best practice and new innovative ways in project management and improvement science.

The post holder will be responsible for the management of the Capital Programme Delivery function and the Capital Programme PMO, ensuring the application of a standardised approach to the management of projects. Specifically, this will involve ensuring that there is clear communication of project plans, deliverables, and resources requirements, risk and issues between the Capital Programme teams and clinical stakeholders.

Education, Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to Degree, Chartered engineer/surveyor or equivalent status level or equivalent level of education, training or experience.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of contract procurement and management
  • Experience of capital contract management and successful delivery of complex projects from concept to delivery
  • Significant experience of delivering NHS Estates and Facilities services which provide VFM and perform in the upper quartile when related to peer benchmarking
Desirable criteria
  • Good knowledge with regard to Sustainability and Carbon Reduction as it applies to the Healthcare environment
  • Author of technical papers

  • Able to adapt to changing priorities and re-focus the work of self and others on new priority areas that may require urgent action
  • Well-developed leadership skills with the ability to set out a clear direction and inspire staff to deliver quality services
