Job overview

Falls Specialist Nurse will work collaboratively with the Falls Lead Nurse to promote Falls awareness and Prevention: 

  • Lead the development, implementation and evaluation of falls prevention strategies and measures in place ensuring patients receive the highest standard of safe care.
  • Will demonstrate a high level of expertise within the falls prevention and management team.
  • Will actively initiate and participate in clinical activity and audits, ensuring effective communication to manage change.
  • Responsible for contribution to and leading of the ongoing development of falls quality improvement across the Trust including development of policies, procedures, and protocols/guidelines.
  • Contribute to the delivery of the Trusts Nursing Strategy.
  • To plan/chair ‘Falls Multidisciplinary Team meetings’ in the absence of the Falls Lead Nurse and to take part in others, ensuring a nursing presence and voice at all levels within the Trust.
  • Provide support and education to ward teams on falls prevention and management issues with Quality Sister (Band 6) Practice Development.
  • Working collaboratively with Clinical Governance teams to ensure accurate   reporting and address areas of potential concern or risk, working in partnership with senior management in relation to compliance of procedures, policies, legislation

This post with be part time with flexible hours and additional hours will be considered if the candidate is already in another part time post. 

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the job include: Leadership 

  • Lead the delivery of the Falls Prevention and Management agenda supporting the monitoring of quality within KGH. Ensuring robust processes are in place, carrying out audits, taking action to rectify any issues identified and providing quality monitoring reports through clinical governance.
  • Challenge appropriately and confidently where standards of falls care, fall below that of the expected level of safety.
  • Provide high quality and innovative teaching opportunities, ensuring periodic reviews to meet current quality and safety priorities for nursing.

Education

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse, Midwife, AHP
  • Highly developed specialist knowledge of falls awareness and prevention. Highly developed skills in patient safety and Governance systems linked to Falls awareness and prevention. Studied at Masters level or equivalent study/experience.
Desirable criteria
  • Educational/teaching qualification
  • Management Qualification or relevant experience
  • Master’s degree or equivalent leadership & management experience

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant knowledge and understanding of operational and professional issues in an acute Trust
  • Post registration experience working at senior/management level.
  • Experience of delivering education or training interventions.
  • Experience of leading change management projects.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of having led new initiatives with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to produce clear, accurate written and verbal reports to Board level

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of effective communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to listen
  • Ability to work in a time critical environment and to be able to deliver to tight timescales and with competing priorities
  • Able to work on own initiative and prioritise work.
  • IT Skills/VDU use
Desirable criteria
  • Skills Proven ability to lead meetings, including agenda setting, chairing the meeting and facilitating engagement and synthesising a conclusion
  • Evidence of quality report writing including the use of data for benchmarking and critical analysis
