Senior Biomedical Scientist – Band 7

 We require a Senior HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist for a Band 7 position in Cellular Pathology. This would suit a BMS with at least five years post registration experience in histopathology who is a FIBMS with an MSc in Biomedical science or equivalent qualification (e.g. IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma)

 WHO WE ARE:

The department receives over 30,000 specimens per year and undertakes all routine histological procedures including specimen dissection, microtomy, frozen sections, special stains and immunocytochemistry. We are UKAS accredited and registered with the IBMS as a pre and post registration training laboratory.

Kettering offers great access to all the beautiful Northamptonshire countryside. It has excellent road and rail network links to and from London, the East Midlands and Birmingham and the hospital is just off the A14 giving easy access to the M1.

 

Main duties of the job

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

The position is part-time (35 hrs per week) 

We are looking for someone who can work comfortably within a team but also with the skills and confidence to work independently. The post will involve taking a leading role in all aspects of the daily work in the histopathology department, including immunocytochemistry, special stains, microtomy, embedding and specimen dissection. The role will also include liaising with the departmental Training Officer and taking a leading role along, with other senior staff, in the supervision and training of junior staff. Previous supervisory and training experience is therefore essential. The ideal candidate will also take on the role of departmental Quality Lead with responsibility for the organisation of the department’s quality management system. You will attend and provide monthly reports to the Directorate Audit Group and act as chairperson for the monthly Cellular Pathology/Mortuary Quality Governance meetings. You must be able to undertake audits and complete root cause analysis and appropriate corrective and preventive actions. Experience of UKAS inspection processes and compliance with ISO 15189 standards are essential. Excellent communication skills both face to face and on the telephone are required. You should be able to work accurately and efficiently demonstrating good organisational skills. The role will be diverse reflecting the nature of the busy Cellular Pathology Department.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. The preparation of surgical specimens for histological examination including:

·         Reception and organization of patient samples

·         Specimen dissection, including category C specimens

·         Processing and embedding of patient tissue blocks

·         Microtomy and staining of paraffin tissue blocks

·         Quality control microscopy checks

2. The investigation and execution of special techniques as required and active participation in the development and validation/verification of new techniques.

3. Participation in the immunocytochemistry service including review of stained slides, fault finding and liaising with other senior staff concerning appropriate corrective action.

4. Technical participation in clinical procedures including:

·         Performing frozen sections as required

·         Orientation, freezing and packaging of muscle biopsies to be sent to a specialist hospital

·         Direct immunofluorescence technique

·         Checking out completed cases to pathologists

5. Participation in internal and external quality assurance programs as appropriate.

6. Responsible for the day-to-day operational organisation of routine Histology, in conjunction with other senior BMS staff:

·         Workflow prioritization, workload scoring and allocation

·         To act as a point of reference for all enquiries, compliments and complaints

·         To ensure that all issues are dealt with promptly and referred to the Manager as appropriate

·         To ensure that all relevant IQC and EQA is undertaken

 

7. Acts as departmental Quality Lead including:

·         Organisation of EQMS

·         To ensure that all staff comply with the department Quality Policy

·   Attendance and provision of monthly reports to the Directorate Audit & Quality Group meetings.

·         Acts as chair for the monthly departmental Quality meetings

8. Assists in general laboratory duties as required including telephone enquiries.

9. Assist other senior staff in supervision and training of appropriate staff including trainees staff supervising competency assessments and undertaking appraisals.

10. Acting as team leader and first contact point for any queries/work related issues which may arise. Supervising competency assessments and undertaking appraisals for assigned team.

11.Such other duties as may be reasonably required by the Laboratory Manager.

Essential criteria
  • HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist. Registration must be current in order to practice
  • FIBMS with an MSc in Biomedical science or equivalent qualification (e.g. IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma)
  • Must have at least 5 years post registration experience

  • Evidence of supervisory and training experience
