Job overview

Thank you for your interest in this new and exciting opportunity. We are looking for a Group Director of Research and Innovation to join our
newly formed provider collaborative of University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) and the University Hospitals of Northamptonshire NHS Group (UHN).

UHL is one of the biggest and busiest NHS Trusts in the country, serving more than one million residents of Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland, providing services at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, Glenfield Hospital and Leicester General Hospital. The combined turnover of UHL is £1.5billion and we employ over 18,000 colleagues.

The UHN Group includes Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (KGH) and Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust (NGH) with a
combined turnover of circa £900M and 11,000 employees. Working together we serve the healthcare needs of two million people.

In this exciting new collaborative partnership, the role of the Group
Director of Research and Innovation will lead the strategic development and delivery of research and innovation activity across the Group, sharing best practice and making best use of resources to increase participation of both patients and staff in clinical research.

Main duties of the job

The role provides an opportunity to build on the substantial existing and current achievements in the field of research and innovation across
Leicestershire and Northamptonshire and to develop a new unified approach across the Group.

As university teaching hospitals, teaching and research are important and you will play a key role in continuing to grow strong wide ranging academic partnerships. We have a once in a generation chance to transform healthcare through our new hospital programmes at KGH and UHL.
These ambitious and wide-ranging transformation programmes will ensure the teams deliver the highest quality service and will significantly improve outcomes and care for patients and our local communities. Building on existing research and innovation will be key to this.

We are looking for someone who can evidence how they deliver and what they have delivered. For us, the former will be the most important as we further strengthen the cultures at UHL and UHN.
We will work together to make sure UHL and UHN have amongst the best cultures in the NHS, as measured by the NHS Staff Survey, Freedom to Speak Up and lived experiences of all colleagues. How colleagues are treated significantly influences care provision and organisational performance and the new Group Director of Research and
Innovation will have qualities that are in line with those of the Trusts. The ability to evidence inclusion, support and kindness are essential for a successful application.

Working for our organisation

With the appointment of a joint Chair and a joint CEO, UHN and UHL have signaled our commitment to working together to develop and enhance services for patients across the East Midlands. This is an exciting time for our hospitals as we explore opportunities to develop new patient pathways, the greater opportunities working at scale gives us to achieve improvements in the way we do things and fantastic career
development opportunities for our colleagues .Our collaboration will ensure we share clinical expertise, strategic planning, and vital resources
across our three trusts to make our hospitals better places to deliver and receive care. Both Kettering and Northampton hospitals have been working as a collective – UHN - for some time. We will continue to build on this work, broadening our opportunities across the East Midlands and learning from what has happened so far to ensure we better identify opportunities to share and improve.
