Job overview

To provide the highest quality care to patients on the Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit within the St Mary's Hospital site in Kettering.

We are offering a £40,000 welcome bonus to the successful candidate, paid over the course of your first two years in post.

Main duties of the job

The Consultant will play a pivotal role in ensuring proactive, recovery-focused, individualised treatment plans are in place and being followed for each patient. He will be supported with a team of professionals who have been recruited specifically for this unit. Our intention is to have a short length of stay to manage only the acute phase of illness and support care in the least restrictive manner.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Provide clinical leadership to the team and take clinical responsibility for the assessment and treatment of patients as part of a multidisciplinary clinical team.
  • Undertake clinical sessions at a prison and attend to all relevant matters there as a senior clinician and leader within that service.
  • Undertake Responsibility for ‘tracking’ and for gatekeeping assessments.
  • Take responsibility for carrying out clinical and administrative duties in relation to the care of his/her patients including completion of reports to First Tier Tribunal (Mental Health), Hospital Managers, Annual Statutory Reports to the MoJ and other statutory and non-statutory reports within the required timescales.
  • Leading the CPA meetings / Provide medical input into MAPPA as required
  • Work closely with forensic and non-forensic services, including the Ministry of Justice in the case of restricted patients, to facilitate the transfer or discharge of suitable patients from higher levels of security to the forensic and other community services in collaboration with other professionals.

Person specification

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • MRCPsych or equivalent
  • On Specialist Register/CCT in General Adult Psychiatry
  • Approval under Section12 of the Mental Health Act
Desirable criteria
  • Additional Postgraduate Qualifications
  • Publication of original research

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to present complex information to a variety of audiences including courts and tribunals
  • Ability to motivate and develop junior Medical Staff and other MDT members
  • An understanding of the use of security in the treatment of psychiatric patients
Desirable criteria
  • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service
  • Able to plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training relevant to this post
