We are seeking a dynamic and highly motivated, organised and passionate individual to lead, manage, and support quality and safety within our Critical Care Unit. You will be a visible and driven individual who has a desire to drive and build on performance, and patient experience. You will be an excellent communicator and develop relationships. You will need a high level of resilience and have proven negotiation skills.

You will work as part of an established team with responsibility and accountability together with the other Matron. As a job share you will continue to enhance and sustain high standards and drive the service forward using a positive and proactive approach. You will work closely with the multi-disciplinary team and the Matrons within the Surgical Division.

As part of the nursing lead for the service you will be influential in leading and managing the critical care team to ensure efficiency and safety, whilst promoting compassionate and supportive team working, team well-being together with a safe working environment and culture.

Corporate Responsibilities

With the Directorate Manager and Clinical Director have joint responsibility for ensuring that the CQC Quality and Safety outcomes are achieved within the Directorate

Work closely within the division to support the operational needs of the Hospital.

Line manage Band 7’s and, Clinical Nurse Specialists within Critical Care and Pain service, whilst also role modelling caring and compassionate leadership.

Act as a Clinical Leader to ensure that staff are empowered and supported to take the nursing/midwifery agenda forward within the designated clinical areas

Lead on the infection prevention, control, cleanliness and environmental standards for the directorate

Act as a source of expert advice and support on nursing clinical and professional issues within the Directorate

Ensure that appropriate education, training and competency assessment is implemented for nursing so that high quality standards are consistently achieved, supporting practice development team with their role.  

Ensure that any complaints are dealt with at first point of contact wherever possible and written complaints relating to Nursing are responded to in a timely manner

Work with the Associate Directors of Nursing or the Deputy Chief Nurse to lead the implementation of defined trust wide projects.

Represent the hospital within EMCCN (East Midlands Critical Care Network) , and work with the lead nurse to benchmark our services against other hospitals and GPICS (Guidelines for the Provision of Intensive Care services )

Supporting Patient Excellence    

Responsible for ensuring that excellent standards of care are achieved in the designated clinical areas as evidenced through Nursing/Midwifery dashboards

Monitor and support the Quality Improvement work associated with the Trust Assessment and Accreditation framework

Ensure that standards of care within clinical areas are maintained at a high standard in accordance with CQC, National and Trust Standards

Jointly responsible with the Directorate Manager and Clinical Director for patient safety and quality outcomes within the designated clinical areas

Work with Practice and Professional Development colleagues to ensure the development of nursing practice is evidence based, in response to service need and consistent with local, national and trust-wide nursing policies, procedures and guidelines

Support the development of and participate in relevant audit activity in the clinical setting and respond to results by formulating action plans and leading changes where necessary

Develop the provision and co-ordination of quality patient care through quality improvement processes that make the best use of the resources available and in accordance with national and local strategies

Jointly responsible for leading the implementation of systems that capture outcomes for assurance purposes (KPI’s)

Provide highly specialist advice and training that may include the performance of clinical interventions in a ward environment

Work a minimum of one day per week on a ward/department taking a clinical workload and lead by example 

Professional Responsibilities        

Participate in the development of the nursing/midwifery team in line with the Directorate, Division and Trust objectives

Work with the Directorate Manager and Clinical Director to lead a quality and safety culture within the directorate that promotes and values achievements in patient safety and quality

Lead investigations into nursing incidents that require analysis of complex, multi-faceted issues as requested, including those that involve staff.  This will include Serious Incidents, Complaints and SOVAs

Following investigation prepare required written report and action plans and present findings to committee panel as requested. Ensure relevant improvement plans are implemented and evidenced

Champion Northampton General Hospital, the services it provides and its support for other front line health services

Contribute to the ongoing agenda in sustaining the achievement of becoming the first UK hospital to achieve Pathway to Excellence designation

Support the Associate Directors of Nursing in ensuring that the Nursing and Midwifery Code standards and management of nursing practice are disseminated and embedded throughout the Directorate

Lead the implementation of nursing recruitment and retention strategies within the directorate in partnership with Trust recruitment and Ward manager for Critical Care

Lead on nursing & midwifery trust initiatives on behalf of the Chief Nurse for Midwifery and Patient Services or the Associate Directors of Nursing

Maintain awareness of national advances and developments within nursing

Participate in the (Matron) on-call rota and resilience planning.

Lead, promote and sustain Pathway to Excellence® philosophy and standards

To successfully complete and maintain Band 8 competencies and demonstrate compliance through annual appraisal.

Demonstrate and maintain knowledge and skill to manage infection prevention measures including the use of personal protective equipment

Ensure all staff within the department/area/ward adhere to infection prevention principles

Communication

Develop effective communication channels within nursing and the multi-disciplinary team, other disciplines and departments.

Communicate with people under difficult situations including distressed patients, carers, visitors and staff, and where there may be barriers to understanding and put in place actions to promote clear and unambiguous communication and understanding

Represent the nursing & midwifery interests of the Directorate and Trust within the organisation and at appropriate internal/external forums

Participate in the collection and analysis of information relating to general performance, contract activity and quality and participate in agreeing strategies responding to trends

Develop team morale and motivation through effective personal leadership ensuring views and decisions are communicated up and down the management structure

Work closely with the well being lead for Critical Care and support the PNA and peer support services.

People/Management Excellence

Undertake annual appraisals and personal development planning for direct reports

Ensure compliance with statutory and mandatory educational and training requirements for direct reports and their teams.  Manage line managers to ensure that all nursing staff recognise their individual responsibilities to education and training

Provide expert clinical advice to recruitment panels.

Undertake full scope of HR process to recruit, retain and proactively manage staff in line with Trust policies, seeking advice from HR Business Partners as necessary, working closely with Ward Manager

Lead HR investigations in line with Trust policy

Supporting Financial Excellence

To support Ward Manager to manage their ward budgets and establishment needs. To have signatory responsibilities for timesheets and temporary staffing authorisation.

Ensure that recruitment and retention processes are pro-active within designed clinical areas so that temporary staffing options are kept at a minimum

To actively participate in identifying the cost improvement plans, (CIPs) and implement CIP’s in practice.

Ensure E-rostering is monitored and managed within Directorate to ensure the provision of an effective clinically focused service.

Policy and Service Development Responsibilities

In partnership with the Directorate Manager and Clinical Director ensure that patient flow is effective and efficient.  This will be achieved by ensuring that responsibilities for patient flow at ward level are understood and effectively implemented

Plan, implement and manage change processes or service reviews, paying particular attention to nursing practice and operational systems within the Directorate

Work alongside the Directorate Manager and Clinical Director as relevant to facilitate initiatives regarding length of stay, integrated care pathways and nurse led initiatives

Where requested take the lead on policy and protocol development to improve patient pathways and patient experience

  • Educated to Masters Degree level or equivalent level of education, training or experience or be working towards
  • Evidence of continuing clinical and professional development.
  • Completion of a clinical leadership programme or equivalent
