An exciting opportunity has arisen within the gastroenterology department for two full time (37.5hrs per week over 5 days) Band 6 Liver specialist nurses.
The post holders will be members of a specialist nursing team responsible for a caseload of patients who are identified as requiring regular hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) surveillance.
Duties will include requesting and interpreting blood tests and imaging, managing an advice line for those with liver cirrhosis, undertaking face to face and telephone clinics, performing fibroscan (Transient elastography) on patients in both the inpatient and outpatient setting (Training will be provided), participating in community & corporate fibroscan events to aid with early detection of liver disease, liaise with a wider team of professionals including specialist nurses, consultants, GPs, and other hospital trusts.

Main duties of the job
The post holder(s) will be responsible for overseeing the liver cancer surveillance of individuals at risk of liver cancer.
This will involve organising blood testing and abdominal ultrasound scans, interpreting results and discussing concerns with the wider MDT and patients directly.
The post holder(s) will assist the viral hepatitis specialist nurses in increasing the early detection of liver disease through use of fibro scanning (Transient Elastography).
The post holder(s) will need excellent communication skills as well as exceptional organisational and time keeping skills.
The post holder(s) will also require good IT skills as use of spreadsheets and databases both local and national will be required within the role.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
· This post holder will be a member of a specialist nursing team responsible for the caseload of liver patients.
· Manage and support a diverse caseload of patients who are under surveillance for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
· Review and request blood tests and abdominal ultrasound scans for the purpose of monitoring those at risk of a HCC or suspected HCC.
· Responsible for face to face nurse led cirrhosis clinics & Fibroscan clinics
· Undertaking inpatient, outpatient and community event fibroscans
· Manage a telephone helpline for patients with liver cirrhosis offering support, advice, information, and counselling.
· Determine from phone call interactions with patients the next course of action and advise patients on this.
· To deliver and receive information which may cause emotional distress to all parties.
· Work autonomously and collaboratively with colleagues to contribute to the provision of a nurse-led service.
· Work closely with other specialist providers including consultants, GPs, Hepatobiliary MDT to provide seamless service for those with liver cirrhosis/suspected HCC.
· To act as a role model and specialist resource to all staff disseminating clinical skills, knowledge and best practice.
· Assist the Leicester Operational Delivery Network (ODN) with early liver disease detection projects.
Actively support and assist line managers with audits, projects, policy and service developments.

Education, Training and qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered nurse
Desirable criteria
- Further postgraduate education to first degree level of equivalent experience or qualification
- physical assessment module or willingness to undertake
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- 2/3 years post registration experience
- Demonstrate ability to be a practitioner at band 6
- Evidence of continued professional development
- Knowledge of Liver cirrhosis and conditions that contribute to the development of liver cirrhosis
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience of service development & cost improvement
- Able to develpp skills to undertake nurse led clinic sessions

- Computer literate with the ability to use MS Word, Excel, Power Point and patient databases
- Highly developed verbal & written communication skills
