Senior Clinical Fellow in Geriatric medicine

NHS Medical & Dental: Senior Clinical Fellow

Job overview

We are looking to recruit a Senior Clinical Fellow to the department of geriatric medicine at Northampton General Hospital to start from the beginning of august 2024 or earlier.

This post is suitable for doctors wishing to pursue a career in Geriatrics and/or stroke who wish to gain further experience of the speciality either before starting Higher Specialist Training or to gain evidence and experience towards a CESR application.

NGH has experience in training doctors to CCT in Care of Elderly Medicine via the CESR route and are developing enhanced mentoring and support systems for this. The posts are also suitable for those considering a career in Acute Medicine and those who want to gain more experience before choosing their ultimate specialty.

These posts are for three middle grade posts in Care of Elderly Medicine and Acute Medicine based at Northampton General Hospital. These posts fill Deanery rota gaps in one CEM HST and two IMT3.

The appointee will rotate around the CEM wards Brampton and Knightley, the Acute Frailty Unit and the Acute and Rehab Stroke wards Eleanor and Allebone.

There may also be opportunities to also work in Orthogeriatric. This post may also take part in the SpR on call rota for acute medicine or the IMT3/SCF rota.

Main duties of the job

The posts will be based at Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust where the successful candidate will work in the geriatric medicine department including acute frailty and stroke and contribute to the provision of first class care.

The post will take part in the SpR on call rota for acute medicine  We wish to appoint a candidate who has a good background in general medicine and who is interested in developing an interest in all aspects of geriatric medicine. Experience in other related specialities such as neurology or rehabilitation would be useful but not essential.

The post-holder will work across all aspects of the service.

There are excellent opportunities to gain experience in all aspects of geriatric medicine. We also have developed links with our colleagues in palliative care, uro-gynaecology and liaison psychiatry to offer opportunities to gain experience in these areas.

The successful candidates will be allocated an educational and clinical supervisor and encouraged to hold an electronic educational portfolio and complete training assessments in line with other trainees at the same level. Educational supervision will be provided and opportunities to develop further experience of geriatrics will be available. The training programme is based on the JRCPTB core curriculum for Geriatric Medicine but will be specifically tailored for each trainee to complement their specialist training to date and ensure the programme meets the educational needs of the appointee.
