Haematology day unit aims to provide a high standard of care for our Haematology patients. We care for patients with a variety of different conditions, therapies and medicines, such as; sickle cell disease, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and stem cell transplants. Cancer care is the fastest growing area of medicine; constantly evolving and changing as advances in research progress.
The Haematology team is looking for someone who is motivated to progress and develop their skills. Education will be given in caring for patients undergoing stem cell transplants, to identify and care for acutely unwell patients, and to care for those patients who are at the end of their lives.
Main duties of the job

Supporting Clinical Excellence: · Take responsibility for the management and organisation of the clinical area when on duty. · To have undertaken or have a willingness to undertake the SACT (systemic anti-cancer therapy) course to facilitate administration of SACT within the department. · Assists in leading the team in the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of care of patients admitted to the department in accordance with Trust and directorate pathways. · Acts as a senior support for staff with recognition and implementation of care for changes in the patient condition. · Responsible for the safe supply, storage, administration, checking and disposal of medications. · Communicates proactively with all staff on the clinical condition and treatment plan of patients and ensures accurate nursing records are maintained by all staff. Actively involves patients, relatives and carers in their treatment and encourages staff to facilitate and enable individuals to assist in their own recovery. · Contributes to and oversees the safe and effective discharge planning of patients informing the discharge team of issues and patient /relative requirements/requests. |

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will deliver high standards of care to patients and their families, ensuring excellent patient experience. In particular, take responsibility for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of evidenced-based nursing care to a group of patients. The post holder will participate in the daily running of the department when required, ensuring smooth and efficient running and in the absence of the Sister take charge on shift. They will take responsibility for their own self-development helping to provide a suitable learning environment and high standards of clinical practice. They will also be required to recognise their own limitations and seek advice and support from senior staff when required. The department consists of 8 chairs, which may increase in the near future. Most days our chairs are used to capacity, creating a busy environment. A number of Nurses and a Health Care Assistant work in the department on a daily basis providing chemotherapy, other systemic anti-cancer therapies (SACT) and support of other Haematological disorders. The Nursing team is supported by the pharmacy team and a Registrar on a daily basis and from time to time members of the Macmillan team and the Hair and beauty coordinator. Within the department we also offer support to Oncology Chemotherapy/outpatients and EAB. Haematology Outpatient Department: Consists of 3 examination rooms in the clinic area. A Health Care Assistants work in the department daily ensuring that clinics are running effectively and safely. The Health Care Assistants will oversee all clinics assisting the Doctors with notes, obtaining observation, height & weights. If the post holder does not hold the relevant training or competencies in administration of SACT, training will be provided by our Practice Educator/ Lead SACT nurse via a 6 week, in house module.

Essential criteria
- Must hold an NMC pin
- A recognised teaching qualification (mentorship)
Desirable criteria
- Recent accredited Haematology module
- Chemotherapy qualification or equivalent level of education or training
- Hold or Working towards a degree level qualification
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Willingness to partake in QI projects
- Previous experience of working in an Oncology/Haematology
Desirable criteria
- Previous people/ Team Management experience
- High level of knowledge related to chemotherapy and the running of an outpatient service
- Experience of using chemo care
- Competent in SACT administration
Skills
Essential criteria
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to liaise with members of the multidisciplinary team
- Ability to foster teamwork and display inclusive leadership
- Effective IT skills
Desirable criteria
- Cannulation and venepuncture skills
